Building Stronger Kids by Strengthening Fathers and Families.

04/10/2026

First off, there is NO WAY to find a good look and stop the video for a thumbnail for me. I guess I don't stop talking long enough. Secondly, I am learning to get the videos on here in a better fashion.
Thirdly, how are you measuring your father and family engagement efforts? I can get you numbers, I fill up cafeterias every day, but what are we doing FOR those people and what are they doing for student success. Father and Family Engagement is not just about a nice breakfast or pizza party. We are moving dads to help their kids move the needle on achievement. How are we moving families toward success? Here is one way to look at it.

Strengthening Our Children's Future: The Indispensable Role of Fathers and the Vision of Strong Fathers-Strong Families, LLC

The landscape of education is constantly evolving, with ongoing discussions about student achievement, well-being, and the factors that truly contribute to a child's success. A compelling article from The 74, "Family Structure Matters to Student Achievement. What Should We Do With That?" by Robert Pondiscio, lays bare a critical, often uncomfortable truth: family structure, particularly the active involvement of a child's father, profoundly impacts academic outcomes and emotional health. This revelation resonates deeply with the foundational philosophy and proven methodologies of Strong Fathers-Strong Families, LLC, a pioneering organization led by J. Michael Hall, M.Ed., dedicated to empowering fathers and transforming educational communities.
The 74 article highlights new research from the University of Virginia ("Good Fathers, Flourishing Kids") demonstrating that children with actively involved fathers achieve better grades, exhibit fewer behavioral challenges, and are less prone to depression. Conversely, disengaged fathers are linked to significantly lower academic performance and a nearly fourfold increase in depression diagnoses among children. A particularly salient point is the finding that the achievement gap significantly diminishes, or even disappears, among demographically diverse children raised in intact families, suggesting that family structure and stability are more critical determinants of success than race alone. This profound insight underscores the urgent need to address the role of fathers in the educational ecosystem.
While schools cannot directly alter family structures, Pondiscio's article wisely suggests that educators can play a vital role by affirming the importance of fathers, strengthening school-home connections, and fostering classroom cultures that provide structure and mentoring. This is precisely where the mission and expertise of Strong Fathers-Strong Families, LLC, intersect with and amplify these recommendations.
J. Michael Hall, a former middle school principal and a recognized "White House Champion of Change" for his work in fatherhood, founded Strong Fathers-Strong Families with a clear vision: to unlock the inherent strengths within fathers and equip them to be powerful forces in their children's lives. Hall's approach stands in stark contrast to deficit-based models, instead focusing on what fathers do well and creating opportunities for them to engage positively with their children. As he often states, their programs move men from "dwelling on their deficits to living in their strengths."
Strong Fathers-Strong Families, LLC, has developed and successfully implemented a range of programs specifically designed for elementary schools, addressing the very need for stronger school-home connections identified in The 74 article. Their signature initiatives, such as "Bring Your Dad to School Days," "Dad and Kid Math Nights," "Science Nights," and "Reading Mornings," are not merely symbolic gestures. These events are strategically crafted to provide tangible, meaningful engagement opportunities that benefit both children and their fathers.
The success of these programs, which have impacted over 300,000 dads and half a million kids across the nation, stems from a research-backed understanding: fathers are significantly more likely to engage when they understand that their involvement directly benefits their children. This principle, echoed in studies like Fagan & Palm (2004), forms the bedrock of Strong Fathers-Strong Families' solution-focused approach. Rather than dwelling on the perceived problems of fatherlessness, they offer practical, accessible pathways for fathers to connect, learn, and grow alongside their children.
For elementary schools, the benefits of engaging with organizations like Strong Fathers-Strong Families are manifold:
Improved Student Outcomes: By fostering active father involvement, schools directly contribute to the academic success and emotional well-being of their students, as evidenced by the research cited in The 74 article. Children whose fathers are involved show better grades, fewer behavioral issues, and greater emotional resilience.
Enhanced School-Home Partnerships: Strong Fathers-Strong Families provides ready-made, effective programs that bridge the gap between home and school, creating a collaborative environment where parents and educators work in tandem for the child's benefit.
Empowered Fathers: The programs help fathers recognize their vital role and equip them with practical parenting skills, strengthening their emotional connection to their children, improving co-parenting relationships, and even boosting their motivation for financial support.
Professional Development for Educators: J. Michael Hall offers staff training and consulting, enabling teachers and administrators to better understand and implement effective strategies for engaging fathers and families. This ensures that family engagement becomes an integral, rather than an "extra," part of the school's mission.
Community Building: These events often bring diverse families together, fostering a sense of community within the school and extending its positive influence beyond the classroom walls.
The University of Texas at Austin's ongoing evaluation of the Strong Fathers-Strong Families intervention in Texas elementary schools further solidifies the significance of this work. By examining the motivations and perceptions of father engagement, this research contributes to the limited body of knowledge on the impacts of father-child engagement within school contexts, seeking to provide empirical data on how such programs improve child, family, and community outcomes.
In conclusion, the insights presented in "Family Structure Matters to Student Achievement. What Should We Do With That?" serve as a powerful call to action for the educational community. The corresponding value proposition of Strong Fathers-Strong Families, LLC, lies in its practical, strength-based solutions that directly address these critical needs. By actively engaging fathers, elementary schools can not only fulfill their mandate for comprehensive student development but also contribute to building stronger families and, by extension, a more flourishing society. The work of J. Michael Hall and Strong Fathers-Strong Families is not just about bringing dads to school; it's about igniting a generational cycle of positive fatherhood that profoundly impacts every child's journey toward success.
