Looking back on a richly curated residency at TCU with Min Kwon, centered on her solo program America/Beautiful. Presented in Van Cliburn Concert Hall, the recital offered a nuanced portrait of American music—balancing lyric introspection, rhythmic vitality, and quiet reflection on national identity.

The musical journey continued with the Kwon-Rostad-Johnson Trio in PepsiCo Recital Hall. The residency included a masterclass engaging TCU pianists in focused, artist-led exchange—an exemplar of integrated musical training.

Shiu Chung (Alex) Wong, a first-year DMA student at the Texas Christian University School of Music, was recently awarded a TCU Graduate Student Travel Grant funded by the Graduate Student Senate and Graduate Studies.

The award enabled travel to Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, for a solo piano recital sponsored by the Prince George Conservatory of Music.

In an act of exceptional generosity, Wong donated all concert proceeds to the Conservatory’s Bursary and Scholarship Fund. Thanks to his initiative and the support of the local community, $760 was raised to benefit students.

Wong is a full-scholarship Graduate Assistant at TCU and a recipient of the STARS Award.

The recital took place on Sunday, January 4, at the Trinity United Church and featured Debussy’s complete Préludes, Book II and Brahms’s Piano Sonata No. 1 in C Major, Op. 1.

Recognizing Artist Diploma pianist Chonglin Xu for his outstanding achievements in this year’s TCU Concerto Competition.

His performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23 earned him a winner’s spot (and also as pianist in Korngold’s Cello Concerto with Jacob MacDonald— a testament to his versatility)

Bravo also to fourth-year undergraduate student Kyle Cornelison, who performed his own Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor and received Honorable Mention—an achievement that highlights his compositional voice as well.

Warm congratulations as well to Jacob MacDonald (cello) and Logan Scott (percussion) for their outstanding winning performances and to Luke McCartney (saxophone).
