💭 “I have SO much to do.”

If your high-achieving middle schooler has ever said this, you know the stress is real—even if, on paper, their workload isn’t as overwhelming as it feels. For students who always go above and beyond, even a reasonable to-do list can seem massive.

💡 Here’s how to help them separate actual vs. perceived workload so they can manage stress while maintaining their high standards:

1️⃣ Validate Their Feelings First 💙
Instead of jumping to solutions, acknowledge their experience:
✔️ “It makes sense that this feels like a lot.”
✔️ “Want to go through it together and see what’s really on your plate?”

Taking the time to listen before problem-solving builds trust and lowers stress.

2️⃣ Make the Workload Visible 📋
Sometimes, the mental load of keeping track feels just as heavy as the assignments themselves. Help your child:
✔️ Check off completed work.
✔️ Circle what’s left.
✔️ Break larger tasks into smaller, more manageable steps.

Seeing progress makes everything feel more doable.

3️⃣ Differentiate Between Essential & Extra 🎯
Many high achievers feel like they should do every extra opportunity or go beyond what’s required. Encourage them to ask:

“What’s necessary?”
“What’s optional that I can let go of this time?”
Releasing an extra task isn’t quitting—it’s prioritizing. Just like when we choose takeout over cooking on a busy night, it’s about preserving energy for what matters most.

4️⃣ Encourage Self-Advocacy 🗣️
If they decide to step back from an optional assignment, guide them in communicating with their teacher. Something like:
💬 “I’ve completed the required parts, but I’m choosing not to do the extra section because I have other priorities this week.”

This teaches them how to set boundaries while maintaining their strong work ethic.

✨ Pro Tip: When your child feels overwhelmed, pause and say: “Let’s take a deep breath and see what’s actually left.” Even a quick reset can turn a mountain into a manageable hill.

📱 Middle school looks a little different these days... 📱

Gone are the days of big, bulky agendas. Instead, middle schoolers are managing their homework, assignments, and grades through sleek digital portals and apps. And while they may know exactly what’s due and when—you might feel totally out of the loop.

💡 Here’s how to connect with your child’s digital homework world (without micromanaging!):

1️⃣ Ask for a Tour 🖥️
Instead of assuming or asking, "Do you have homework?" try:
➡️ "Show me how you check your assignments!"
Let them walk you through their online system—it’s a chance for them to be the expert!

2️⃣ Learn Their System 🔄
Ask:
✔️ How do you know when something is due?
✔️ Do you get reminders or notifications?
✔️ What’s working well for you?

3️⃣ Spot the Gaps (Gently!) ⚖️
If they seem overwhelmed or things are slipping through the cracks, try:
💬 "What do you think would help you stay on top of things?"
Sometimes small tweaks—like setting reminders or color-coding—can make a big difference.

4️⃣ Let Them Take the Lead 🚀
This isn’t about checking up—it’s about showing interest and building trust. Your middle schooler will appreciate your support without feeling like you're hovering.

✨ Pro Tip: A quick weekly check-in on their system (not just their grades!) helps them stay organized and keeps communication open.

👀 Middle school parents—what's been your experience with digital homework? Does your child have a solid system, or is it still a work in progress? Drop a comment below! ⬇️

✨🚌✨ at the table recently

Photos from Sit Beside's post 11/14/2024

‘It feels good when the table is full.’

There’s something special about a full table. 💛 One of our Sit Beside learners recently said, ‘It feels good when the table is full.’ That simple statement captures the magic of our small-group learning sessions on Big Blue.

Each week, we create a space where learners not only work through math problems but also feel a sense of belonging and support. Together, they build confidence, share ideas, and cheer each other on. 🌱

Right now, we have a few open seats in our 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade math groups—and we’d love for your learner to join the table. Let’s make learning a journey they’re excited to be part of. 🚌💙
