MLK Montessori is celebrating 100 YEARS of Black history, legacy, and impact!

Did you know?

MLK Montessori was born out of purpose during a time of tragedy. Following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., three visionary Fort Wayne women—Dottie Fitchey, Dorothy Holt, and Mary Hoban—turned heartbreak into hope. Inspired by Dr. King’s belief in equal education for all children, they carried his dream forward by opening MLK Montessori.

What started as one donated classroom at St. Mary’s Catholic Church serving just 18 children has grown into a lasting pillar of our community. Through moves, growth, and resilience—from Lewis Street to Village Elementary, and finally to our permanent home at 6001 South Anthony—MLK Montessori has continued to thrive.

Today, MLK Montessori serves up to 100 children and has proudly graduated over 5,000 students—each one a testament to the power of education, equity, and community.

This Black History Month, we honor the vision, the journey, and the generations of excellence that continue to shape our future. 🖤✨

Last week, we celebrated 100 days of school and 100 days smarter! Our students showed up as adorable “friends of wisdom,” and the smiles (and learning!) were off the charts. 🧠✨

❕❕❕Weather Delay Notice for Tuesday, January 20th.❕❕❕

Due to the weather conditions forecasted for tomorrow morning, MLK Montessori School will operate on a two-hour delay. School will begin at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.

For students who ride the bus, bus pick-up times will also be delayed by two hours from your normal scheduled time.

This past week, our students learned about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 🤍

They read a story about why he is such an important part of our history and listened to his powerful words from an original recording of his speech.

Together, we talked about our dreams for the world and shared how we can spread peace, kindness, and understanding—both inside and outside of our school.

Today, we honor Dr. King for his unwavering commitment to peace, love, equality, and unity among people of all races and backgrounds.
