Indiana Tech’s student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) was honored by the organization with a 2025-26 Superior Merit Award. SHRM is the world’s largest HR professional society, representing 340,000 members in 180 countries.

The Superior Merit Award program recognizes chapters every year for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student chapter members. Indiana Tech’s chapter, the largest student organization on campus, and has earned a Superior Merit Award every year since 1998.

Professor of business Dr. Lisa Kindred is one of the co-advisors of Indiana Tech’s SHRM chapter. She says the award strengthens the visibility of Indiana Tech’s HR program, reinforces its commitment to career readiness and demonstrates students developing the knowledge, competencies and leadership skills valued by the HR profession.

“This recognition validates our commitment to preparing HR leaders while providing students with meaningful experiences beyond the classroom,” Kindred said. “Through leadership opportunities, networking with HR professionals, community service, professional development and career-focused programming, our students gain practical experiences that complement their academic studies and prepare them for successful careers in human resources.”

The Superior Merit Award launched in 1972 to encourage student chapters to require ongoing excellence in the following areas:

-Student chapter requirements
-Chapter operation
-Chapter programming and professional development of members
-Support of the human resource profession
-SHRM engagement

The chapter’s other co-advisor, associate professor of sport management Craig Dyer, calls the award a validation of the success of Indiana Tech’s human resource students, and the quality of its program curriculum and faculty to prepare students for success in human resources.

“Indiana Tech’s College of Business is well positioned to provide current and future HR students with high-quality opportunities such as internships, networking and SHRM certification,” Dyer said. “SHRM has high standards and our HR program will continue to provide students with the tools they need to succeed in the competitive and everchanging HR job market.”

The university’s HR degree program has an outstanding reputation for cultivating exceptional human resource professionals and launching successful careers. It has helped more than 500 Indiana Tech students pass the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) exam—a competency-based certification exam that measures one’s ability to apply HR principles to real-life situations.

More than 1,000 military-connected students are now enrolled at Indiana Tech, according to the university’s Military and Veteran Services department. The achievement represents more than a number. Military-connected students include active-duty service members, reservists, veterans and individuals who have previously served in the armed forces. The designation also extends to spouses and immediate family members of current and former military personnel.

While reaching 1,000 military-connected students has been an organizational goal, the milestone is ultimately the result of the personalized support and guidance provided every day by Indiana Tech’s Military and Veteran Services team.

Every member of Indiana Tech’s Military and Veteran Services team has a military background, giving them a deep understanding of the unique challenges military students face and the educational benefits available to them. From navigating military tuition assistance and GI Bill® benefits to understanding deployment-related concerns, the team works to ensure students can focus on their education and future.

Indiana Tech also offers a range of programs and resources designed specifically for military-connected learners. These include unlimited Yellow Ribbon waivers for eligible students, deployment protection policies, generous credit for prior learning opportunities and scholarships for service members, veterans and their spouses.

Indiana Tech’s criminal justice department and the Fort Wayne Police Department’s Crime Scene Management Unit hosted members of the Youth Civil Air Patrol on campus for crime scene demonstrations in early June.

The Youth Civil Air Patrol program is a branch of the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary open to individuals ages 12-18. It offers training in leadership, aerospace education, physical fitness and character development.

Around 30 students were on hand for presentations from an FWPD crime scene technician outlining the procedures for conducting a crime scene investigation in the context of a homicide. They also participated in a hands-on fingerprinting exercise.

Dominic Lombardo, Indiana Tech’s criminal justice program lead professor, says the exposure from the sessions helps reinforce respect for authority and rule of law, understand community safety systems and a sense of duty to serve and protect others.

“Introduction to Indiana Tech’s criminal justice department helps these young people understand real-world community issues, build positive relationships with law enforcement and promote trust between youth and justice institutions,” Lombardo said. “Many of the cadets are interested in military, law enforcement, or public service careers, and exposure to our criminal justice program introduces them to career paths such as policing, corrections and the legal field.

Lombardo says participation in sessions like these help them become more responsible citizens, better leaders and decision-makers, more informed about public safety systems and better prepared for careers in service and justice.

The Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education (CASCE) has recognized Indiana Tech’s exercise science strength and conditioning program with a five-year accreditation.

Starting in 2030, a degree from a CASCE-accredited program will be required for any individual seeking to earn their Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certificate. CSCS certification is an industry standard for many professional positions in the field of strength and conditioning and sports performance.

Director of Indiana Tech’s Exercise and Sport Performance Laboratory Dawn Anderson says the recognition demonstrates the program’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of quality and excellence.

“Our curriculum, faculty and facilities have undergone rigorous evaluation to ensure that we provide students with the knowledge, skills and practical experience necessary to excel in the field of strength and conditioning and keep athletes safe,” said Anderson.

The process for earning CASCE accreditation takes about two years. An initial application is submitted to demonstrate that the foundational pieces are in place. Once approved, programs become eligible to complete a yearlong “self-study,” in which the program complies with CASCE standards while receiving input from faculty, administrators, field experience supervisors and current students.

Dean of Indiana Tech’s College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Anne Gull says the accreditation speaks to the quality of the program’s faculty, and will allow students to stay on track with evolving professional standards.

“It is valuable to be recognized by an external agency, and that provides incoming students with assurances that their career goals will be met,” said Gull.

Indiana Tech joins only 60 other schools around the world currently with CASCE accreditation. The five-year recognition is the maximum length of initial accreditation offered by the council.
