This garden was an absolute joy to put together: from plotting out the ideal location in the familyâs back yardâŠto working with a custom carpenterâŠand planting it up with the help of the homeownersâ kids! đ©âđŸ
This garden is a âscience classâ for this familyâs childrenâŠand maybe the parents too! While we were planting together, the Mom told me, âDigging in the dirt is so satisfying. Itâs like a sensory bin for adults!â đ
I canât wait for the next one next week! Helping a non-gardener become a is one of my great joys! đ±

Itâs never âtoo lateâ to start a veggie garden. Iâm just beginning to plant mine this weekend because Iâve been busy putting in clientsâ gardens!
For Fort Wayne Locals:
âïž It all starts with a phone call to learn about your garden or future garden.
The we do an in-person consult and I help you come up with a plan moving forward.
Some people already have a garden and just need coaching for success:
đ±what to plant together (aka companion planting)
đ±what kind of soil is best
đ±seasonality or
đ±best location in their yard.
Some DIY itâŠ
Some garden in pots and bucketsâŠ
Some buy their own raised bed and have me install/fill/plant itâŠ
And others want custom-built beds to suit their special space!

About 18 months ago, I unofficially launched my âveggie-garden-scapingâ (plus flowers, of course) business by signing up for a Christmas Market at
With about 3 days to prepare, I scrambled to get biz cards made and my sign was my toddlerâs chalkboard easel with a sign that read âAsk me your garden questionsâ in December. In Indiana. âïžđ€Ł It snowed.
My husband built me an awesome portable raised bed and I sold a few spider plants and herbs.
When I dropped off payment for the event, I discovered their awesome workshop at the Hallâs commissary location. The lady in charge told me that they grow all of their own summer Deck flowers FROM SEED in their growing space. Of course I asked if I could take a peek. They gave me a little tour. It was mostly empty in late December, but still impressive!
The Deck has long been our FAVORITE summer time restaurant and last fall I admired their beautiful gomphrena.
Today was our first 2026 visit and I off-handedly asked the bartender if the âplant ladyâ was around and if she might have some extra gomphrena seeds because I couldnât find any locally.
He told me he could do better. âI donât know what gomphrena is but the plant lady told me there are a few extra seedlings and you can just have one if you know which one it is!â He even threw in a tropical canna! â€ïž
Talk about the best night at the Deck ever for this flower and garden lady! I canât WAIT to plant them! đ Many thanks to bartender (and carpenter) Joe!
Basic components of a beautiful porch or patio planter:
1. Central height (spike, canna, fern are some of my favorites)
2. Main attractionâŠcan be color-based or your favorite flower â fills in most of the area around the spike; make sure itâs for shade or sun based on your planter/pot location
3. Something that trails or spills out of the planter (ivy and sweet potato are my faves)
4. Fill in the gaps with a contrasting colored flower or greenery đ
I hope you find this helpful!
