In a Montessori kindergarten year, your child will do real academic work, but it looks different from a typical kindergarten classroom.

Instead of a teacher leading the whole group through the same lesson at the same time, your child will choose from a sequence of hands on materials that build reading, writing, and math skills at their own pace, often working alone or with a partner for long stretches of uninterrupted time.

As the oldest in the age 3-6 classroom, this is the year your child will move into more advanced work like reading longer passages, doing multi-digit math with materials like the golden beads, and taking on small leadership moments, like helping a younger child learn something they mastered last year.

The day isn't broken into short subject blocks. Instead, children settle into one piece of work and stay with it as long as their concentration holds. By the end of the year, your child will have covered kindergarten level reading, writing, and math, but through repetition and self direction rather than worksheets or group instruction.

Summer Camp Week 6 was all about Intro to Montessori

Ms. Lisa spent the week leading refresher lessons to help the students get ready for the new school year. The children also enjoyed making homemade banana bread—which was delicious! 😊

To beat the heat, the pool has been a great way to stay cool and have some fun. They ended the week helping wash the pools so they could be put away until next summer.

Watching a child find their voice is one of the greatest joys of this work.

At SMA, emotional growth is just as important as academic milestones and we celebrate every step a child takes toward understanding and expressing their feelings.

Thank you to our families for trusting us with these precious years.

Self regulation is a big deal and it does not happen overnight. At Southwest Montessori Academy, our teachers spend just as much time helping kids name their feelings and work through frustration as they do on academics.

This parent shared about their child's growth and it is the kind of thing that sticks with kids well beyond their time in our classrooms. Social emotional skills like these are built into everything we do here, every single day.
