Prevention is personal. And meaningful change takes people who are willing to keep showing up.

For Julie and Gary DeVercelly, hazing prevention became a lifelong commitment after their son, Gary DeVercelly Jr., died from hazing in 2007. Julie and Gary have shared Gary Jr.’s story, educated policymakers, and advocated for stronger protections for students. Their advocacy helped drive the movement that ultimately led to the Stop Campus Hazing Act amendment to the Clery Act.

Their work is a powerful reminder that lasting change requires education, transparency, accountability, research, and prevention.

This National Hazing Awareness Week, we invite you to take action in your own community. Clery Center offers free hazing prevention and education resources to help campuses move from awareness toward meaningful prevention.

What does hazing really look like? And what can we do differently?

"We Don’t Haze" is a short documentary that brings together the experiences of families and people impacted by hazing with perspectives from leaders working to prevent it.

The film helps communities identify hazing behaviors, understand their impact, and consider healthier alternatives to traditions that can harm students.

Clery Center and StopHazing also offer a free companion guide with resources for using the film to facilitate conversations and educational programming with students, staff, faculty, and campus organizations.

During National Hazing Awareness Week, watch "We Don’t Haze" and use it to start a conversation about what belonging, leadership, and tradition can look like without hazing.

Is your campus ready to advance its approach to hazing prevention?

The Stop Campus Hazing Act amendment to the Clery Act established new requirements related to hazing policies, reporting, transparency, and prevention. But compliance is only one part of creating safer campus communities.

Our free guide, Clery Act Hazing Requirements: Advancing Your Approach, provides practical information to help campuses understand the requirements and consider how they can strengthen their existing hazing prevention efforts.

Use it to assess where your campus is today, identify opportunities for improvement, and move from meeting requirements toward meaningful prevention.

In October 2027, Clery Center will celebrate 40 years since Connie and Howard Clery co-founded this organization. We're looking ahead with gratitude—and with a clear understanding that there is still work to do.

The next generation of campus safety challenges will require the same courage, collaboration, and commitment that inspired our founding. Help us prepare for what's next. Donate today: https://www.clerycenter.org/donate

Two reports. Different requirements. One important reason to understand the difference.

The Annual Security Report (ASR) and Campus Hazing Transparency Report (CHTR) both provide information about hazing, but they serve different purposes and have different reporting requirements.

That distinction can be confusing for campus professionals and even more so for students, families, and other members of the campus community.

Our free resource, The Annual Security Report & Campus Hazing Transparency Report: Key Distinctions, breaks down the differences and helps campuses communicate more clearly about what each report tells us.

📣 NEW RESOURCE: Hazing Transparency Webpage Checklist 📣

To kickoff National Hazing Awareness Week, Clery Center is unveiling a new free resource to help campuses strengthen how they share information about hazing.

Under the Clery Act, colleges and universities must publish a Campus Hazing Transparency Report (CHTR) twice per year, and make it available in a prominent location on the institution’s public website. But meeting the requirement is just the starting point.

A strong hazing transparency webpage can make information easier to find and understand while connecting students, employees, and campus community members with reporting options, prevention resources, and support.

Our new Hazing Transparency Webpage Checklist helps campuses review their webpages, make sure required information is included, and identify opportunities to make their information more accessible and useful.

We are deeply grateful to Senators Amy Klobuchar and Bill Cassidy and Representatives Lucy McBath and GT Thompson for introducing bipartisan, bicameral resolutions honoring the life and legacy of our co-founder, Connie Clery, during National Campus Safety Awareness Month.

Following the 1986 murder of her daughter, Jeanne, Connie and her husband, Howard, transformed their grief into action—helping advance laws that changed campus safety and strengthened transparency, accountability, and protections for students and survivors.

The resolution recognizes Connie’s nearly four decades of advocacy and her unwavering commitment to making campuses safer. It also reaffirms the importance of the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act and the work that continues today.

We are especially grateful for the recognition of Connie during the first National Campus Safety Awareness Month since her passing. Her legacy is not simply one to remember; it is a responsibility to carry forward.

For Connie. For Jeanne. For every student whose story is still being written.
