Can project based learning be harmonious with a classical, restful approach to education?

We say, yes!

St. Morwenna students explored the ideas of Manifest Destiny and US Westward Expansion by forming a fictional town council considering whether to head west. They used first person sources, books, and documentary resources to form opinions and craft presentations from particular perspectives (logistician, health, family life, native community concerns, and the opportunity advisor). After their presentations, they engaged in an informal debate, responding to each other’s positions with well thought out questions, along with drawing from their research to answer questions in character.

This project was warmly received by students and parents alike - students say they enjoyed getting to be more deeply immersed in a time period in order to understand its complexity more thoroughly.

The motion passed, and the council voted to head west - and then stepped out of character to debrief, acknowledging the historical complexity that we understand now, in the aftermath of US policies and broken treaties with indigenous communities during this period.

All in all - a fabulous celebration of the learning we’ve enjoyed over the last few weeks!

Does a backseat filled full of Koine Greek curricula count as an anti-theft device?

Apparently not to our students!

As we look ahead to next year and the reality that we may need two levels of Greek instruction, one of our students who has fallen in love with this study is taking responsibility to be the lead learner in Greek among our second year students. She’s been working toward this aim this year, and I am so very proud of her.

She and I pored over some of the curriculum resources I’ve collected over time and came up with a plan that will be hospitable and engaging for all of our students, using a variation of a one-room schoolhouse approach.

Another student asked shortly thereafter, “can we make time for more Plato? That Socratic dialogue we read in class was so much fun!”

It’s such a joy to wrestle with worthy challenges with these students! Here’s to looking ahead to another year of learning at St. Morwenna Scholè Community, in partnership with our beloved host church, Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church

Our beloved host church Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church gave their parish hall - and our meeting space - a LOVELY glow up before a recent clergy conference, and we are so grateful!

We’ve embued it with a bit of our customary Schole community day chaos today 🤪…

It’s lunch time right now, and we have students reviewing lines and practicing vintage hair and makeup for an upcoming theater production…

…while another student is basking in the sun and assembling her latest 3D print (a self initiated prop project for the same production).

Another student is sharing about the set of 1920s songs she’ll be performing at a local coffee shop for their upcoming murder mystery event.

And yet the conversation keeps naturally returning to the Westward Expansion living history project they’re working on for presentation next month, and our consideration of how the virtue of endurance is distinct from the skills of leadership.

I find myself marveling at the difference in our students, how they’re so often busy *doing* and less often tempted by the vice of mindlessly *consuming* the work that others have done.

Sure, personal electronics are an occasional distraction for students and teachers like, but we’ve discovered that supporting our students in being curious and creative is one of the best ways to keep personal electronics in their proper place - as tools that support living an incarnate, rich life.

St. Morwenna Scholè Community wants to congratulate our friends at Ciao Bella Market on their grand opening today! We had the opportunity for a sneak peek just the other day and we’ve been waiting (mostly patiently) until they’re open for everyone to shop so we could share our experience!

For anyone who loves the opportunity to pause and enjoy good food and conversation like we do with our students, you’ll want to check out this gem of a shop in Perry!

Our students were talking about how hands on activities like handicrafts make it easier to pay attention, and after talking about how the modern era created fidget toys for such a reason, we noted that listening while working on handicrafts is a thing, too!

While no one had brought yarn or hooks today, we had food to arrange in aesthetically pleasing ways (because good books and good food are natural companions)!

So we talked about the spiritual symbolism of our current read, Dracula, while arranging a charcuterie board of food to share.

Sometimes, an event happens in the public square that seems so momentous to students that it’s all they’ve managed to focus on, instead of previously planned assignments.

On one hand, sometimes the best path back to something like normalcy is a return to one’s regular duties.

On the other hand, sometimes such moments open up opportunities for deeper learning than our ordinary lives commonly allow.

During yesterday’s Writing and Rhetoric class at St. Morwenna Schole Community at Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church, we put aside our current read of Dracula to wade into a time-tested tool for examining differences in the mutual pursuit of truth - the Socratic dialogue. It seemed a fitting activity after a week that some students had felt the weight of in a way that was new to them as adolescents.

Right away, as we read, students noticed both similarities and differences between this form and what passes for debate in modern media. They were laughing at Socrates’s replies. Was he incredibly sarcastic? Humble? Possibly both?

It always delights me when students discover how witty and engaging Socratic dialogues are…if you’re finding them dull, chances are good you’re doing it wrong. 😉 These dialogues are best savored in a group, read aloud, and digested together over good food and drink.

Welcome back, St. Morwenna!

Today is the first day of the school year for our beloved St. Morwenna Scholè Community, and the first book we’re reading in our literature and rhetoric course is Dracula. We normally enjoy charcuterie throughout the year here and there to help ourselves remember this part of the Good Life, and today my students crafted our first day charcuterie board…

…complete with a little Dracula for me!! 🤣🥰

I felt so seen and loved!

Mr. Bede introduced us to the first line of the Our Father in our Greek study, and kept this re-entry into our academic endeavors very manageable and hospitable. Most of our Greek study uses immersion supplemented with grammatical study, as we attempt to learn language in a way that is more natural.

This year also brings study in Biology, complete with lab work and dissections later this year, and US History with political and economic theory through primary source documents from the Revolution to contemporary times.

Already the conversations have been so enriching and engaging - what an auspicious start to the new school year!

It’s the last week of school, and we enjoyed a fun pizza lunch at My Father's Place Pizza and dessert at Jeremiah’s courtesy of Southern Santa of Houston County. They gifted our community some gift cards in appreciation for our students’ work on mapping and testing routes for their Christmastime ministry. Thank you, 🎅🏽!

We love to cultivate the enjoyment of good books, and sometimes this means modeling exactly that.

So many times, the most dynamic lessons happen in spite of rather than because of, teacher planning.

At the beginning of today’s literature and rhetoric class, we worked through some practical details about narratio, the beginning of an essay or address where one gives the audience a little bit of context regarding the situation.

Somehow in the conversation that ensued, deep interest in the idea of manipulation vs persuasion emerged, and all of a sudden, the conversation went deep!!

So we stuck with the topic and recalled the tools we have to understand ideas and terms better, specifically 2 of the 5 common topics: definition and comparison.

We didn’t simply consult a dictionary, though. We used a process of inquiry to craft a definition of manipulation - which allowed students to think incredibly deeply about each of these ideas and how they’re distinguished from one another.

There’s a thing that happens when we wrestle with and apprehend truth at such a deep level and it resonates in our souls. After ideas fly furiously, there’s a moment where the depth of truth is felt among the community and there’s a kind of contented sigh and quiet that descends while everyone contemplates what has just been discovered.

Truly - what a glorious day to learn together this has been!
