Most people are willing to help—until it costs them something. We often say things like “I’ll help you,” but silently attach conditions: if it’s convenient… if it’s easy… if it doesn’t disrupt our plans.

Jonathan shows us a different kind of friendship. When he recognized that God had chosen David, he willingly laid down his own claim to the throne and placed everything he had into David’s hands. Later, when David was running for his life, Jonathan made an extraordinary commitment: 1 Sam 20:4 (NASB 2020) – Then Jonathan said to David, Whatever you say, I will do for you.

That is not convenient friendship. That is costly, sacrificial, selfless love.

When Saul was confronted with his failure, he did what many of us are tempted to do when we feel cornered—he made excuses. But Scripture paints a very different picture of David. Psalm 78:70–72 says God chose David to shepherd His people with the integrity of his heart and skillful hands.

The Hebrew word for integrity is tōm—meaning pure, whole, and undivided. It is who you are when no one is looking. It is telling the truth when shifting the blame would be easier. It is owning your failure instead of explaining it away.

God is not impressed with excuses. He is looking for hearts marked by integrity.

Impatience is practical atheism.

When we refuse to wait on God’s timing, we are saying we do not trust Him.

King Saul did not commit what we would call a scandalous sin. He simply would not wait. Under pressure, he took matters into his own hands — and in doing so, he removed God’s hands from his life (1 Sam 13:13–14).

Fear makes you rush.
Faith makes you wait.

Waiting is not punishment. Waiting is protection.

God’s timing is not late. It is sovereign.

Not everyone God uses is impressive on the outside.

When Scripture calls David “a man after God’s own heart” (1 Sam 13:14; Acts 13:22), it isn’t talking about perfection — it’s talking about direction.

David wasn’t flawless. He failed. He fell. But his heart was pointed toward obedience.

He walked with God faithfully.
He waited on God patiently.
And when he sinned, he confessed truthfully.

God isn’t looking for image.
He’s looking for integrity.

And He still searches for hearts that are fully His (2 Chron 16:9).
