The first fully-equipped Army Chinook, designated the CH-47A, entered service in August 1962 with a gross weight of 33,000 pounds. The Chinook is the U.S. Army's only heavy-lift cargo helicopter supporting combat and other missions.

Summer 1943: The Big Red One march was composed at Constantine, Algeria by then Captain Donald T. Kellett who was hospitalized and recovering from wounds suffered during the Battle for Hill 609 at El Guettar, Algeria. It was dedicated to Major General Terry Allen, who commanded the Division in North Africa and Sicily, and who awarded Kellett the Silver Star at Kasserine Pass, Tunisia. Kellett, who retired from the U.S. Army as a colonel, became widely known throughout the Army during his 30-year military career for his marches. Colonel (Ret) Kellett died in 1991.

August 12, 1912: Samuel Fuller is born. He served with the 16th Infantry Regiment in WWII and saw heavy fighting. In 1945, he was present at the liberation of a German concentration camp and shot 16 mm footage, known as V-E +1, that was later integrated into the French documentary Falkenau: The Impossible (1988).

Fuller used his wartime experiences as material in his films, especially in The Big Red One (1980). After the war, Fuller co-authored a regimental history of the 16th Infantry.

Fuller passed away in 1997.
