Crowded spaces can be experienced differently by everyone. Neurodivergent thinkers often have a strong awareness of their environment and can use that self-knowledge to create experiences that feel comfortable, successful, and enjoyable.
Here are a few strategies to build on those strengths:
Use your ability to anticipate and prepare to learn what you can about the space ahead of time. Check out the layout, identify exits and quieter areas, consider how long youโd like to stay, and think about what will help you feel prepared.
Know what supports your sensory needs and bring those tools with you. Headphones, sunglasses, fidgets, or other sensory supports can help you stay engaged and enjoy the experience in a way that works for you.
Taking a break is a strategyโnot a setback! If you notice that you need some space, step away and give yourself time to recharge. Setting a goal for what youโd like to experience or accomplish before taking a break can help you stay connected to what brought you there.
๐Most importantly, there isnโt one โrightโ way to navigate a crowded space. Understanding what works for ๐ฎ๐ค๐ช gives you more choices and opportunities to participate in ways that feel successful.
