Sand Mountain & Beyond is an Alabama 4-H career exploration program designed to introduce young people to the many career opportunities available right here in Northeast Alabama. Throughout the year, participants will take part in hands-on experiences, field trips, and interactions with industry professionals in areas such as agriculture, natural resources, food systems, and STEM.

We are so proud of these students for taking advantage of this opportunity to explore, learn, connect, and discover what their future might hold! We can't wait to see where their adventures take them! 🚀

Today, our DeKalb County 4-H’ers became citizen scientists at the Little River Canyon Center as we participated in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census! 🔎🐝
Our 4-H’ers spent time observing, identifying, and counting pollinators while learning more about the important role these tiny creatures play in our environment. From bees and butterflies to flies and other insects, every count helps scientists better understand pollinator populations across the Southeast. 🌎💚
The best part? You can join us! The Great Southeast Pollinator Census is open to everyone—no science or insect expertise required! All you need is a blooming plant, 15 minutes, and a willingness to observe and count. 🙌
📅 The 2026 census is happening August 21–22, so grab the kids, head outside, and become a citizen scientist!

🐝🌼 Become a Citizen Scientist with 4-H! 🌼🦋

Join DeKalb County 4-H and the JSU Field School for The Great Southeast Pollinator Census on Friday, August 21, from 10:30–11:30 a.m. at the Little River Canyon Center!

Youth ages 5–18 are invited to participate in this exciting hands-on event where you'll become a citizen scientist by helping count bees, butterflies, and other important pollinators. Your observations will contribute to a regional research effort while you learn why pollinators are essential to our environment and food supply.

This is a fun opportunity to explore nature, develop science skills, and make a real impact!

Our bunnies had lots of visitors last night! 🐇🍀 Thank you to 4-H member Julianna Brooks for leading our joint DeKalb and Cherokee County 4-H Rabbit Showmanship Clinic. We appreciate her sharing her knowledge and helping our members get ring-ready (and maybe convincing a few rabbits to cooperate! 😄). We can't wait to see everyone at the Rabbit Show on October 20 at the DeKalb County VFW Fair!

Yesterday, the Northeast Alabama 4-H Hiking Club ventured underground for an unforgettable adventure at Cathedral Caverns! 🥾🦇

Members explored one of Alabama's most impressive caves while learning about the fascinating formations that have taken thousands of years to develop. They discovered the difference between stalactites, which hang from the ceiling, and stalagmites, which grow up from the cave floor, and gained a deeper appreciation for the natural history and geology found right here in our state.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a day of exploration, learning, and outdoor adventure. We can't wait to see you on our next hike!

🏹 We had a bullseye of a day at our 4-H Archery Day Camp with Cherokee County 4-H at the JSU Field School!

From learning archery safety to hitting the target (most of the time 😉), our 4-H'ers had a blast. Thanks to everyone who helped make today a success!

🏆 Huge congratulations to our Junior 4-H Poultry Team!

In their very first State 4-H Avian Bowl competition, they went undefeated and won! We are so proud of their hard work, teamwork, and dedication.

A special thank you to our volunteer, Jennifer Brooks, and to all of our parents for your support, encouragement, and commitment. This accomplishment wouldn't have been possible without your investment in these youth. 💚🐔🎉
