CONGRATULATIONS TO Dunbar High School student, Owen Jacoby
Lee County Teen Overcomes Loss and Cancer to Publish His First Graphic Novel
Seventeen-year-old Owen Jacoby turns creativity into inspiration with the publication of The Adventures of Captain O-Mazing
FORT MYERS, Fla. (July 14, 2026)β At an age when most teenagers are focused on school, sports and spending time with friends, 17-year-old Owen Jacoby has accomplished something few adults ever doβhe has written and illustrated his first published graphic novel.
The Adventures of Captain O-Mazing is the culmination of years of imagination, creativity, and determination. Behind its colorful pages is a story of remarkable resilience.
Owen, a student at Dunbar High School in Fort Myers, experienced the heartbreaking loss of his mother in 2022. Then, in 2025, he was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma. From December 2025 through January 2026, he spent more than a month in isolation at Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida while undergoing treatment. Throughout that difficult time, Owen continued to draw, create, and imagine new adventures for Captain O-Mazing.
His talent caught the attention of former News-Press editorial cartoonist Doug MacGregor, who visited and drew with Owen several times during his hospital stay.
"I could tell right away that Owen is incredibly talented and has a bright future as a cartoonist," said MacGregor. "I'm so proud that he took his passion to the next level by publishing his own graphic novel. That's an incredible accomplishment."
The Adventures of Captain O-Mazing follows a young superhero on an action-packed adventure that encourages readers to believe in themselves, face challenges with courage and never give up.
"Creating this book gave me something positive to focus on," said Owen. "I hope kids enjoy the adventure, use their imaginations and know they can keep moving forward, even when life is hard."
Through his original illustrations and engaging storytelling, Owen hopes to inspire young readers to discover the joy of reading, spark their imaginations and believe they can achieve big dreams despite the challenges they may face. He also hopes his book encourages other children to create stories, dream up adventures and share their own unique ideas with the world.
Owen credits Dog Man and Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey as the inspiration behind his journey as a comic book creator. He hopes to follow Pilkey's example by encouraging young readers to embrace their creativity, tell their own stories and believe in their abilities.
Now available on Amazon, The Adventures of Captain O-Mazing will also be available soon in local bookstores and comic book shops.
Owen is available for media interviews, school visits, library presentations, and community events, where he shares his journey as a young author and illustrator while encouraging other children to pursue their own creative passions.
