FGCU Mathletes

Outreach program for bright and talented middle school students interested in investigating concepts in mathematics related to STEM related majors and careers.

The program will run from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday. Each day students will participate in instructional sessions taught by FGCU professors, problem solving sessions led by FGCU mathematics graduate students and hands-on STEM activities. The instructional session will be conducted as an inquiry-based lesson. Students will be working in small groups on interesting problems and hands-on activities in various branches of mathematics including probability, geometry, number theory, matrix algebra and algebraic functions. During the problem sessions, as the students work in small groups, they will be guided by FGCU mathematics graduate mentors through the process of thinking logically and creatively to solve mathematical problems. Problem solving sessions will encourage student participation, help improve communication and leadership skills. With the guidance of the professors and mentors, students will learn how to effectively articulate their thinking processes. In STEM activity sessions students will be taken on a tour by FGCU professors from computer science, chemistry and engineering fields to showcase STEM departments. The connections between mathematics and wide variety of fields will be discussed. Professors will share their experiences working in STEM related careers. To stimulate this discussion students will participate in a series of activities - bridge construction and testing competition, building a spectrometer activity, robotics activity, math in basketball challenge.

Join FGCU Mathletes for an exciting, hands-on morning of biology and math designed for middle school students!

Students will discover the hidden world of freshwater life as they learn to use a compound microscope, collect and investigate pond-water samples, search for fascinating microorganisms, and use scientific clues to identify a mystery organism. Along the way, they’ll combine biology and math to complete fun scientific challenges and earn stickers for their Environmental Scientist Passports!

This Mathletes event is supported by the FGCU Department of Mathematics, with funding provided by the FGCU College of Arts and Sciences and Scientists' Society of Southwest Florida.

Calling All Middle School Mathletes!

Registration is now open for the 2026 FGCU Mathletes AMC 8 Virtual Preparation Workshop!

Students will meet virtually Friday evenings and Saturday mornings from October 9–November 21 to work through problems from previous AMC 8 competitions, learn problem-solving strategies, and prepare for the AMC 8 Competition at FGCU in January 2027.

The workshop will be led by Kayla Kerr, an FGCU senior majoring in Software Engineering who also led our AMC 8 workshop last fall.

Florida Gulf Coast University was honored to host Dr. Tony DeRose for his engaging presentation, “Pixar in a Box: The Math Behind the Movies.” 🎬📐

Dr. DeRose gave students and the community a fascinating look at how mathematics helps bring animated films to life. His talk inspired many of our mathematics majors to consider new possibilities in animation and computer graphics.
