A teardown inspection only counts if it checks the same five things on every restraint, every time. Identify and log the ride, restraint position, and component before removal.

- Run the full webbing length and every stitched connection.

- Cycle the buckle and latch to confirm engagement and release.

- Check mounting points, endplates, and hardware against the ride specification.

- Extend, retract, and complete the lock test on the retractor.

- Document anything that needs review before it goes back into storage or returns to service, and follow your ride manufacturer's own inspection and replacement procedures.

A teardown is the best chance all year to see what a restraint really went through. Pay attention here, and next season starts ahead.

Inspection season isn’t the time for “looks fine.”

Safe-Strap’s training checklist calls for a pass-or-fail review of five areas:

▪ Webbing: cuts, fraying, abrasions or discoloration
▪ Buckle: cracks or failure to lock and release cleanly
▪ Stitching: loose or pulled threads at load-bearing seams
▪ Mounting: hardware that isn’t secure or consistent with the ride manufacturer’s installation instructions
▪ Retractables: housing damage, lock-test failure or binding during extension and retraction

For a retractable restraint, buckle it and attempt to pull out additional webbing. The locking mechanism should engage and prevent more webbing from feeding out. Once released, the webbing should retract fully and smoothly.

The determination is straightforward: if the restraint fails one check—or the installation doesn’t match the manufacturer’s instructions—it should be replaced.

ASTM F2291 provides the restraint-classification framework referenced in the training. The ride analysis and manufacturer’s instructions determine what the application requires.
