Mangrove trimming is definitely wet work. 🌿💦

Once a branch is cut, the job is not over.

Our crew has to retrieve the cut material from the water, carry it back to shore, and move it to an upland area for disposal.

It is one of those behind-the-scenes parts of mangrove trimming that most people never see, but it is an important part of completing the work and leaving the shoreline clean.

Some days we trim from land. Some days we trim from a boat. And some days, we are standing right in the water getting it done.

Just another day in the mangroves. 💜

Mangrove trimming can be about more than the waterfront view. Sometimes, it’s about keeping a walkway clear and accessible. 🌿

Along this property, the mangroves grow right beside a pedestrian walkway. Thoughtful trimming helps maintain usable access while allowing the mangroves to remain part of the shoreline.

This is another reason I look at how a property is actually being used before determining the trimming approach. Walkways, docks, lifts, neighboring structures, and the growth pattern of the mangroves all matter.

The goal is to maintain the access people need while working responsibly around the mangroves that belong there.

Mangrove trimming isn’t always about the view. Sometimes, it’s about access. 🌿🚤

Mangroves can be trimmed for vessel ingress and egress, meaning creating or maintaining appropriate access for a boat traveling to and from a dock or lift.

For waterfront property owners, that functional access can be an important part of the trimming plan.

The key is understanding where trimming is needed, how the mangroves are growing around the access area, and what requirements apply before the work begins.

It’s another example of why mangrove trimming should be planned with both the shoreline and the way the property is actually used in mind.

A freshly trimmed mangrove hedge with a little history behind it. 🌿

This area was affected by Hurricane Ian, and before we completed this trimming, we obtained a mangrove trimming permit for the property.

Projects like this are a good reminder that mangrove trimming is not simply about showing up and cutting. There are regulations, permit requirements, and limits that may need to be considered before the work begins.

In this reel, I’m sharing a closer look at the finished hedge and one of the trimming considerations we keep in mind when managing mangroves responsibly.

Mangrove Mama got some nursery help today. 🌿💜

There’s something extra special about planting mangroves when your son is there helping you do it.

We spent some time together in the nursery getting mangroves planted and cared for, and I had to capture the moment.

I love the work I get to do, but getting to share a little piece of it with my son makes it even better.

A new dock, thoughtfully planned.

For this Sanibel property, this natural shoreline opening is where a new dock is planned.
The existing opening gives us an opportunity to work with what is already here while minimizing unnecessary disturbance to the surrounding mangroves and native coastal vegetation.

Before moving forward, I also consider the nearby root systems, shoreline conditions, water access, proposed construction, and any environmental permitting requirements that may apply.

Good waterfront planning begins by understanding the shoreline before changing it.

Yes, these are red mangrove propagules in my sink. 🌿
When we collect red mangrove propagules, I place them in water before they move on to planting in our nursery.

In nature, red mangrove propagules begin developing while still attached to the parent tree. After they drop, they may float with the tides until they reach suitable conditions to take root.

Here, I’m mimicking part of that natural journey as we prepare them for the next stage of our nursery process.

This is one of my favorite parts of being the Mangrove Mama: caring for these propagules from collection to nursery and, eventually, watching new mangroves grow. 💜

Mangrove trimming in action. 🌿

This is the part of the work that takes strength, balance, and a good understanding of how each mangrove is growing.

Working from the water allows our crew to reach the water-facing side of the canopy and focus on the branches that need attention.

It may look like a quick action shot, but responsible mangrove trimming requires patience, precision, and respect for the structure of the tree.
I’m always grateful for a hardworking crew that is willing to get in the water and get the job done right.

Mangrove work is not always glamorous. Sometimes, you have to get in the water.

Every shoreline presents its own set of challenges, and sometimes the best way to reach the area that needs attention is to work directly from the water.

This is the part of mangrove trimming people do not always see: navigating tight spaces, working around docks and roots, and adapting to the conditions of the property.

No two shorelines are exactly alike, which is why the approach should always fit the site.
