One of my favorite ways to get my third graders excited about nonfiction is giving them something they actually want to read!

We’ve been using Scholastic News for Grade 3, and I love how it brings engaging, current nonfiction into our classroom while connecting to topics we’re already learning about. The articles are short, accessible, and written specifically for third graders… which makes them perfect for building background knowledge AND getting some great conversations going! Plus, I love being able to hand them a physical magazine to read.
If you teach third grade and want to try it in your classroom, check out the link in my bio!

7:30 AM to 12:00 AM as a third grade teacher and coach. A long day, but a good one since our varsity team won a 5 set thriller!

Back to school season is exhausting! Especially when you mix in a new reading curriculum and coaching a fall sport. I’m finally feeling back into a routine and a little less tired.

We finished our first read aloud of the year today. This is always the first chapter book I read to my class. Even though they weren’t alive for 9/11, they’ve heard of it. Especially each year around the anniversary of the attacks.

I love the I Survived series because it’s age appropriate, leads to a lot of great questions and discussions, and leaves many students wanting to read more historical fiction books. Books are pretty amazing.

Optional Book Club is back! Last year, my class did about 6 optional books throughout the school year. I usually had about half of my class choose to participate.

Each week, I assign chapters for students to read. They can read on their own, have someone read to them, or do a mixture of both. I give 3–4 comprehension questions for students to answer each week. I also have students write a short summary of what they read that week. (For example, if they read chapters 1–4, they’d write one summary about what happened in those chapters.)

I have recess duty on Thursdays this year, so that’s the day the assigned reading needs to be completed. Students who participate in the book club will get to eat lunch in the classroom, and we’ll go over the answers and discuss the book together.

I’ve collected class set books in various ways. Scholastic bonus points, collected from teachers giving copies of books away, asked family/friends to donate books, and have purchased some on my own.

I received positive feedback from families last year, so I’m going to keep it going again this year!

If you’re interested in the editable letter or the questions I’ve made so far, comment CLUB and I’ll DM you the links!

Back-to-school means lots of planning, organizing, and getting my classroom ready for a new group of
students. One thing I don’t have to overthink? Keeping my classroom clean. I always keep
Disinfecting Wipes stocked to tackle everyday classroom messes, from shared desks to snack crumbs, so
I can spend more time focused on my students. Plus, they kill 99.9% of germs without smelling like it!

You get what you get! I had nice tables, but I’ve really wanted students to have their own space. When I had an opportunity to get desks for my classroom, I took it!
