21st Century Native Americans

"In its May 1977 issue, National Audubon Society AUDUBON magazine, had published a lengthy article by Dennis Hanson, "Pumping Billions Into the Desert: The Case Against the Central Arizona Project." The proposed Orme Dam was a major structure of the CAP and required relocation of the Fort McDowell Reservation tribe.

The AUDUBON article included interviews with several Fort McDowell Indian people and they gave their side of the story.

Afterwards, in its July 1977 issue, AUDUBON published a letter-to-the-editor written by Arizona's powerful U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater, which read in part: "They (the Yavapais) are very nice people, very sweet people, but they are very lazy people, and somebody has changed their minds."

The July 23rd, 1977, Phoenix, Arizona, ABC-TV program was the Yavapais' response to the senator.

The TV host is Roy Track and his regular Sunday TV program, "21st Century Native Americans." Fort McDowell Reservation Tribal President Hiawatha Hood responds for his people. Also appearing: tribal member Dixie Lee Davis, anthropologist Dr. Sigrid Khera, and Carolina C. Butler, all representing the Committee to Save Fort McDowell.

Later, in the September 1977 issue, AUDUBON published a letter-to-the-editor from Charles E. Trimble, Executive Director of the National Congress for American Indians, directing his words at Senator Barry Goldwater saying in part, "We (Indians) are no lazy, but concerned and informed.""

Letter written by Carolina Butler about the TV program.

Photos from Fort McDowell Museum & Culture Center's post 02/23/2022

We found it! We now have the full 30 minute ABC-TV program "21st Century Native Americans," hosted by Roy Track where then Fort McDowell Tribal President Hiawatha Hood appears with Dixie Lee Davis, anthropologist Dr. Sigrid Khera, and Carolina Butler who respond to Arizona's powerful U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater and his published response in the July 1977 issue of AUDUBON where he referred to the Fort McDowell Yavapai people as "lazy."

The real question is: would anybody be interested in seeing it? Let us know! ๐Ÿ˜
