the creation of abstract watercolor is truly a joy to watch. play and art are so intertwined, and this is always a great lesson to use to invite play into art🎨🫟🖌️ these paintings often change so much after drying, the colors are more vivid when fresh, the textures more crisp- that this style of painting is a great space for the appreciation of materials and process, an exercise of letting go of precise control in one’s art.

For our final project of 25-26 school year, students crafted scrumptious “culinary collages”. Inspired by the Funk Art movement, artists combined scrap paper and fabric, popsicle sticks, cardboard, yarn, tissue paper, rhinestones, pompoms, recycled materials and more to create delicious food artworks!

It’s the last friday of the school year!! 4 days to go- but I am still sharing the wonderful work my middle schoolers have completed this year!

in april, students made their own Ancient Greek inspired pots🏺🇬🇷🏛️ instead of planning from scratch, they rolled the dice 🎲 and let probability determine their pot design!! students used their math skills to calculate how rare or common their pot was based on the combinations of their patterns and pot shape, then added their own designs to communicate stories that are important to them, just like the Ancient Greeks did with their vases. To finish it off, they made their own columns to display their work on!

summer is almost here- 5 days to go bluedevils! until then, I want to share the incredible work my students have created this year!
in february we explored and emulated the styles of 4 different artists from around the world, focusing on themes of love, for valentine’s day in our “Art with Heart” unit. one of the artists that students emulated was Yayoi Kusama. student artists explored the ideas of love and obsession with repetition and geometric patterns in sharpie and watercolor.
