Why Dr Paul Lowe Advises Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen – BS/MD Admissions

Many parents wait until their child is a rising senior before contacting Dr. Lowe for BS/MD admissions advice. Some may have planned to handle admissions on their own, later realize their current consultant does not specialize in BS/MD admissions and is making mistakes, or assume Dr. Lowe will accept them late in the process at a discounted fee. Colleges and medical schools often say they use a “holistic” review process. In simple terms, this means admissions committees look at more than MCAT scores and GPAs when deciding who would be a strong fit.

As more students apply to medical school, these non-academic factors matter even more. Your experiences, communication skills, and personal qualities can help you stand out from applicants with similar grades and test scores. That’s why it is important to tell a clear, honest story about what you have learned and what perspective you would bring to medicine.

Many applicants have similar activities on their résumés, such as volunteering, shadowing, clinical work, and research. To make these experiences stand out, focus on what you did, how you took initiative, where you showed leadership, and what each experience taught you.

Myth 1: Perfect grades guarantee admission
Truth: BS/MD programs reject thousands of 4.0-plus students yearly. Your story matters more than your GPA. We advise our clients on how to successfully communicate their personal stories and achievements.

Myth 2: You need to be just a research-oriented applicant
Truth: BS/MD programs want well-rounded students who will become future medical doctors. We advise clients, based on proprietary knowledge and insights, on how to be a part of a well-rounded class specific to each BSMD program and university.

MYTH #3: Admittance is all based on the essay, so it needs to be perfect.
Truth: Make sure your essay truly reflects you and your values. Be genuine. Admissions officers read hundreds of essays, and they can tell which feel real. Show your personality, and don’t try to appear as someone you’re not. A “too perfect” essay may raise red flags!
