MAC Chair Sara Korol presented to the Board 3 motions passed by the Committee at our Feb 18th meeting. 2 of the 3 motions were recommendations that schools be allowed to fill dual language teacher positions with qualified candidates from outside the school district (in spite of the hiring freeze). MAC asserts, based on observations from our visits to school and feedback from principals, that finding and keeping qualified Spanish Dual Language teachers is one of the biggest issues facing schools with DL programs.
On this issue the Superintendent’s response was unequivocal and enlightening:
When a position is open that the District cannot fill with a current employee due its specialized nature, THE DISTRICT WILL APPROVE THE HIRING OF AN OUTSIDE CANDIDATE.
This is very good to know! MAC will spread the word.
MAC Chair Korol also made the official recommendation to the School Board today that the District pursue opening DL pre-k classes at all schools which currently have a DL program. MAC contends that Dual Language would be draw for parents to enroll their students earlier in Broward County public schools, and by establishing such DL pre-K classrooms, BCPS would be playing to its strength of having a high percentage of families who speak a language other than English at home who would be drawn to an education that centers bilingualism at its heart.
The Board, again, was very receptive to this recommendation and immediately added DL pre-K to the agenda of its upcoming workshop on pre-K education.
Hooray!

¡Excelente noticia! 🎉

Thank you to all of those that came to support Multilingual Advisory Committee at the School Board workshop. The Superintendent pulled the proposed revisions to Policy 1070 and there will be a Superintendent Task Force that will work with advisories to make changes that benefit all BCPS stakeholders.
