Not knowing the basics is enough to keep you from ever booking a class. You don't need a gi, you don't need special shoes, you don't need to own anything. Loose clothes and a water bottle get you through your first class. We explain the rest once you're here, in person, not over a checklist.

A professor is on the mat for every round your child trains, watching pairings, correcting technique before it becomes a problem. Structure comes before sparring, and sparring comes with supervision every time.

Guard, mount, berimbolo, none of it means anything to you yet, and that alone makes the sport feel closed off. It isn't. New students aren't handed vocabulary on day one, they're handed one technique at a time, explained in plain language. The terms come later, once your body already understands the movement.

One bad first class was enough to close the door on the whole idea. Maybe nobody explained anything, maybe you got thrown into a room with people who'd trained for years. A single experience like that isn't proof BJJ isn't for you, it's proof that class wasn't built for a beginner. Ours is.

The idea of a stranger applying real pressure to you, with intent, is enough to keep most people from ever stepping on a mat. New students don't get thrown into hard sparring in week one. Technique comes first, control comes first, and training partners are matched with experience level in mind.

We opened Rilion Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Fort Lauderdale school on Griffin Rd four years ago with a few mats and no idea who'd actually show up.

Four years later, we're teaching hundreds of people in the area. Kids growing stronger. Adults learning to feel better in their own skin.

Some of you were part of the group that helped us found this school. A few of you are still here. Others had to step back when life got in the way, and that's how it goes. The family keeps growing anyway.

None of this runs without Team Soul and the rest of our staff, on and off the mat, every single day. That work doesn't always get seen, and it should.

If you're on the mat right now, this school is what it is because of you. And if you've been meaning to try a class and haven't yet, this week's a fine time to change that.

The thought of being watched while your body does something unfamiliar, in an outfit that doesn't hide anything, is its own reason to stay home. People on our mat are focused on their own class, not on judging anyone else's body. Loose clothes work fine until you're ready for a gi, if you ever want one at all.
