πŸš€ House Cup: To Infinity and Beyond!

Our Build the Tribe Quest is all about learning how to become a team and what better way to start than with a little friendly House Cup competition?

This time, our teams Obsidian Syndicates and Antler Paws went head-to-head in a challenge for Future Fridays: build the tallest space elevator possible! πŸ—οΈπŸŒŽπŸš€

With limited materials and plenty of competing ideas, each House had to strategize, communicate, experiment, and adapt to see just how high they could go.

Future Fridays are all about getting learners ready for their future Hero’s Journey building the skills and mindset to tackle challenges they’ll encounter beyond the studio.

But for now, there was an even more important question:
Who could build the tallest? πŸ‘€

A new school year means a new chapter and at Acton, it begins with the Build the Tribe Quest. πŸ¦…

At the start of every school year, learners take on challenges designed to help them get to know one another, build trust, learn how to work together, and discover what it means to be part of a Tribe. It’s an important first step in creating the culture of the year ahead and, thankfully, it also leaves plenty of room for fun.

This year learners headed outside for some friendly competition, starting with a Battle of the Red Cup King or Queen πŸ‘‘πŸ₯€. Armed with pool noodles and a carefully balanced red cup, learners had to stay focused, develop a strategy, and knock their opponents’ cups from their perches without losing their own. Then came a classic: Tug O’ War! πŸ’ͺ

Because building a Tribe takes communication, courage, collaboration and sometimes a little healthy competition. Here’s to a new year of learning, growing, and taking on challenges together!

During our Keystone Ceremony, learners and their families sign the Family Promises and place their stones into a rock tumblerβ€”a symbol of the growth, challenges, and transformation that the year ahead will bring.

The stone will change over time. And so will they. πŸͺ¨

Every new hand represents a learner joining our community with their own ideas, strengths, questions, and dreams. And with so many new learners joining us recently, we had the chance to celebrate a whole lot of new hands!

➑️ Here’s a little look into how we do things: every year before we jump into another session of learning, challenges, growth, and adventure, there’s something important that most schools don’t even think about that we always need to do first: π‚πŽπŒπ„ π“πŽπ†π„π“π‡π„π‘ πŸ€—

🌴 Our π—ͺπ—˜π—Ÿπ—–π—’π— π—˜ π—–π—˜π—₯π—˜π— π—’π—‘π—œπ—˜π—¦ are always about exactly that.

πŸ₯˜ This year our families gathered for a potluck, shared delicious food, played games, spent time outside, and connected as a community. We also gathered for a special ceremony centered around 𝗙𝗒π—₯π—§π—œπ—§π—¨π——π—˜: the courage and strength to keep going when things get hard. 😼

πŸ§‘β€πŸ§’β€πŸ§’ This day wasn’t just about getting ready for a new school year. It was about building a COMMUNITY around our CHILDREN.

πŸ€— At Acton, we believe education works best when parents + school aren’t working in separate worlds. Our learners thrive when the adults around them share a COMMON LANGUAGE, UNDERSTAND the journey, and SUPPORT their growth together.

πŸ—οΈ Parent Boot Camp gives us a chance to equip, encourage, and connect with our parents, to explore what it really means to raise independent, capable young people and how we can support them without taking over their journey.

Because Acton isn’t something that happens only inside the studio.

⭐️ It’s a partnership.

A child can be doing β€œfine” in school and still not be truly challenged. Here are a few things we often hear from parents before they start looking for something different.

1. β€œMy child finishes work quickly and then just waits.”
2. β€œThey are not struggling, but they are not excited either.”
3. β€œThey used to ask more questions than they do now.”

Challenge isn’t just about difficulty but about ENGAGEMENT, curiosity, and growth. When children are appropriately challenged, they’re MORE invested in their learning. They TRY harder and they CARE about the outcome.

When they’re not, they learn to do just enough. This is something we work hard to avoid at Acton.

If any of this sounds familiar, it might be worth looking into to see your child needs a more engaging learning environment!

πŸ“ One of the best parts about our no-homework policy is that children actually get to have a childhood! Like the way it was when so many of us were children.

🀷 There isn't much evidence that homework is that effective, especially during the K–5 years...so why assign 30-60 minutes everyday to such a young child?

🌳 Children need to play outside, enjoy fulfilling activities that light them up, and most importantly, spend time with their family.

✨The minimal (and debatable) benefits of homework during the early years isn't worth sacrificing the other aspects of childhood that are key to healthy development!
