“I feel like my toddler should be talking more…”
“I don’t know if I should be worried…”
This post is for you 🤍
We’re officially making waves in Georgia 🌊
and now serving families in the CSRA (Augusta area!)
As a pediatric speech therapist and toddler mom, I know how overwhelming it can feel when you’re not sure what’s “normal” or what to do next.
That’s why I created a model of therapy that meets you where you are, literally.
We come to your home or your child’s daycare and help you build communication through real-life moments, play, and connection.
Because language doesn’t happen at a table, it happens in your everyday routines.

If you’ve ever narrated your entire grocery trip to your toddler…
you weren’t being extra, you were supporting language 🤍
The grocery store is one of the best places for real-life communication because it’s:
• predictable
• sensory-rich
• naturally motivating
Here’s how to make it language-friendly without pressure:
✔️ Label what you see
✔️ Use short describing words
✔️ Ask a question, then pause
✔️ Talk about what things feel, smell, or sound like
✔️ Let your child choose when possible
No flashcards.
No prep.
No “say it again.”
Just language layered into the moment you’re already in.
📌 Save this for your next grocery run
💬 Tell me what’s the most random thing your toddler insists on putting in the cart?

If reading at home feels hard, it’s not because you’re doing it wrong…
it’s usually because you’re trying to make it look “right.”
From a speech-language perspective, toddlers learn language best when reading is:
• interactive
• flexible
• pressure-free
You don’t need your child sitting still.
You don’t need to read every word.
You don’t need to finish the book.
You just need shared moments with language woven in.
That still counts 🤍
Save this for bedtime 🤍
Future-you will thank you.

There’s a difference between worrying and being aware.
Awareness looks like noticing patterns.
Listening to your gut.
Adjusting how you show up.
From a speech-language perspective and as a parent
that awareness is one of the most powerful tools you have.
It doesn’t mean something is “wrong.”
It means you’re paying attention.
And that matters more than you realize.

If your toddler is using mostly single words, it can be tempting to quiz them or push for more.
But from a speech-language perspective, here’s what actually helps:
Single words are meaningful communication.
Your child doesn’t need to be tested…they need to hear language used naturally.
When you expand what they say with short, simple phrases, you’re giving their brain:
• new vocabulary
• sentence structure
• confidence to keep communicating
No repeating required.
No pressure to perform.
Just real language, in real moments.
Save this for playtime later 🤍
Future-you will be glad you did.

At SHORS and First Words to Forever, we don’t chase perfect sessions or polished routines.
We focus on what actually builds language over time:
Connection before correction.
Repetition without pressure.
Play that fits into real life.
Because language doesn’t grow in isolation,
it grows in the everyday moments you’re already living.
If this approach feels like a better fit for your family,
you’re in the right place.
This approach guides both my clinical work at SHORS and the parent coaching we offer through First Words to Forever

Hot take from a pediatric SLP + toddler mom 👇
First words don’t come from drills or pressure.
They grow from playful, connected moments you’re already having every day.
When your toddler stacks blocks, splashes in the bath, or points to something they love, that’s where language begins.
✨ No pressure
✨ No perfect activities
✨ Just everyday play, done with intention
If you’ve been wondering “Am I doing enough?”
This is your reminder that you already are 🤍

🧠 SLP tip: Follow their lead, model simple words, and talk with them, not at them.

When toddlers are learning language, they don’t need to be quizzed.
From a speech-language perspective, here’s why expanding works better than testing:
• It keeps interaction natural
• It reduces pressure to perform
• It exposes your child to richer language
• It supports vocabulary, grammar, and confidence
Your child doesn’t need to repeat you.
They just need to hear language used meaningfully over and over again during real play.
Short phrases.
Real moments.
Connection first.

If you’re doing these things, you’re already supporting your child more than you realize.
Language development doesn’t move in straight lines.
And progress doesn’t always show up on checklists or scores.
From a speech-language perspective, and as a mom, I want you to know this:
Noticing.
Questioning.
Adjusting.
Showing up.
That matters.
You’re not behind. 🤍

If your child didn’t qualify for services, it can feel confusing or even invalidating.
Here’s the part that often gets missed:
State-funded Early Intervention and school-based services use strict eligibility criteria.
Those criteria are designed to allocate limited resources…not to determine whether a child would benefit from support.
According to ASHA and early childhood research:
• Language development exists on a continuum, not a pass/fail line
• Children can have functional gaps that don’t meet cutoff scores
• Early, targeted support can help prevent small gaps from becoming bigger later
Not qualifying doesn’t mean:
❌ you imagined the concern
❌ your child won’t benefit from support
❌ waiting is the only option
It simply means your child didn’t meet that system’s criteria at that moment.
At SHORS and in First Words to Forever, we focus on connection, functional communication, and real-life skills. Not just scores.
If your gut says something feels off, it’s okay to listen to it.
Save this if you’ve ever felt stuck in the gray area 🤍
You’re not alone and you’re not wrong for asking questions.
