Don't Just Trust the Abstract πŸ”

Just because a study made it into a "prestigious" journal doesn't mean you should accept its conclusions uncritically.

In the latest episode of ABA on Call, Rick and Doug share seven questions, originally outlined by Hank Pennypacker, that every behavior analyst should ask when evaluating single case research. From the experimental question being asked, to the behavior being measured, to the design and data analysis, these questions give you a real framework for critical thinking.

They then put these questions to the test on a real published study, and the results reveal exactly why this framework matters.

Being a good consumer of research means going beyond the abstract. It means checking the methods, the measures, and the logic before accepting the conclusions.

πŸ—£οΈ Testimonial Tuesday

RBTs don't just need to know what a behavior looks like β€” they need to know why it's happening.

That's the heart of our course "Why Does This Behavior Happen?" Trainees walk away able to identify the four functions of behavior: attention, escape, tangibles, and automatic/sensory. They also learn how the same behavior can mean completely different things depending on the client.

Our learners consistently tell us the clear video examples and step by step breakdowns are what make this course click, helping them move from just describing actions to actually understanding them in RBT terms, including how to respond when a situation becomes unsafe.

Function over topography. That's the framework. πŸ’‘

Parenting Problems Through a Behavior Analytic Lens

What’s the difference between reinforcement and bribery? And why do some children seem to prefer one parent over the other?

In this episode, Rick Kubina and Doug Kostewicz tackle two real parenting questions sourced from social media, using behavior analysis to separate myth from science and provide practical, compassionate guidance. Together, they explore:

βœ… Reinforcement vs. bribery, incentives, and the Premack Principle
βœ… How reinforcement schedules can be faded as natural contingencies develop
βœ… Why objective data matters when evaluating family dynamics
βœ… The role of motivating operations, attention, and reinforcement in parent-child interactions
βœ… Practical, evidence-based strategies behavior analysts can use to support families

Whether you're a BCBA, RBT, educator, or parent, this episode demonstrates how behavior analysis can help solve everyday parenting challenges with empathy and science.

New Course Alert πŸŽ‰ "Why Does This Behavior Happen?"

Ever sit in a session and think, "Why is this happening right now?" πŸ€”

This new 1-hour course is built for RBTs who want to move from just responding to behavior β€” to actually understanding it.

You'll learn the four functions of behavior (attention, escape, tangibles, and automatic/sensory) through real, in-the-room examples β€” plus how to spot the clues in your sessions that point to why a behavior is happening in the first place.

Because the same behavior can mean completely different things for different clients β€” and knowing the difference is what makes your data (and your BIP follow-through) so valuable to your BCBA.
