Freshmen: Meet your Counselor: Dr. Bal
As you begin this journey, here are a few important tips to keep in mind:
✅ Plan for Success
• Graduation requires 26 credits and at least a 2.0 GPA.
• Challenge yourself with courses that align with your interests and future goals.
• Start thinking about your four-year high school plan and what you hope to achieve.
✅ Focus on Academics
• Your freshman grades matter. Strong academic habits now can positively impact your GPA, future opportunities, scholarships, and college admissions.
✅ Get Involved
• Join clubs, sports, music, drama, volunteer organizations, or other school activities.
• Colleges and employers value meaningful involvement and leadership.
✅ Build Your Resume
• Keep track of awards, volunteer service, leadership roles, employment, extracurricular activities, and achievements.
• SchoolLinks is a great tool for documenting your accomplishments.
✅ Think About the Future
• Explore careers, colleges, military options, and other postsecondary pathways.
• Talk with teachers, family members, professionals, and your counselor about your interests and goals.
✅ Take Care of Yourself
• High school can sometimes feel overwhelming. Learning skills such as mindfulness, positive thinking, perseverance (grit), and healthy stress management can help you thrive.
• Remember: asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Most importantly, know that you do not have to navigate high school alone. My office is always open if you have questions about academics, schedules, friendships, future planning, or anything else affecting your success.
