Hello SMS Band students and parents!
I wanted to share this information with you all about some band specific rules that we will have in place for the return to school. Attached is the guidance that we have received from the county (via state and national studies) that we will adhere to in order to keep everyone safe and allow us to keep making music.
The biggest thing is that all students will need to have separate band mask for band class. Oboes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, and french horns will all need a mask with a hole cut in it for the mouthpiece to slide into. There is a picture attached to show what is needed. This mask can be cloth or surgical. Flutes will need a disposable/surgical mask because they are light and will allow the head joint to slip behind it. Low brass (trombone, baritone, tuba) may want a separate mask but could use their regular mask since the guidelines only require them to pull down when playing. String bass and percussion will need to have their mask on at all times.
The band program has purchased all other safety materials for the year but the band mask will need to be provided by the student/parents in order to participate in band. This mask can be kept in the students' instrument case. The document attached should help answer any other questions about safety measures for the 2020/2021 school year.
I know this year is going to have some challenges unlike any year prior, but I personally have always made it my goal for band to be the reason students are excited to come to school each day and even with the adjustments/restrictions that are in place, that will never change. This will be my 14th year in this position and I will continue to make the band room a safe, educational, fun-loving environment for everyone. SMS Band is special and will continue to be so throughout the challenges of the 2020/2021 school year. See you next week!!
