While we're powering the future, we need to power ourselves too. The coffee maker in our breakroom keeps count of the cups made. We pulled the numbers, and in 16 months, the interdisciplinary researchers, professors, staff, and students in the Powerhouse made 10,277 cups of coffee.

Energy storage is a rapidly developing technology, serving a number of roles in meeting our changing energy needs. However, bringing an energy storage system online presents a wide variety of technical challenges.

For today's Speaker Series, Ujjwol Tamrakar, a Senior R&D Engineer from Sandia National Labs, presented his work on high-fidelity testing and validation of energy storage controls. His team examined how hardware-in-the-loop simulation and testing can help prevent problems during the deployment of energy storage systems, including how the simulation and testing can be scaled and adapted as needed.

Our Outreach team visited Tavelli Elementary School! They explored the concept of soil structure through a game of Kerplunk, discovering how roots, water, and other components of soil have an effect on the ecosystem as a whole!

The Energy Institute recently supported nine high school students from Weld County, Colorado, as they competed in the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge!

After successfully completing a rigorous design review process, the team brought their rover concept to life with support from Powerhouse staff. They then shipped their completed rover to Alabama, where it was put to the test in challenging, moon-like conditions.

Their hard work paid off: the team earned both the Jeff Norris and Joe Sexton Pit Crew Award and the Industry STEM Engagement Award. Congratulations to these talented students on their achievement!
