Are you into phase spaces? Hard spheres gases? Fun pictures of circles and things?

Check out Dr. Matthew Kahle's talk this Friday (Nov. 3rd) at 2pm in Weber 201! And get this, he earned his masters degree here at Colorado State before going on to get a PhD and a position at OSU.

Here are the details on the talk:

Title: Topology of the phase space of a hard spheres gas

Abstract: We can define a topological space that records all possible positions of n non-overlapping disks of radius r in some region in the plane. This space is interesting mathematically, and is also interesting from the point of view of physics, since it is the "energy landscape" or "phase space" for a hard spheres gas. Surprisingly little is known about the topological properties of these kinds of phase spaces, but it would be extremely interesting to find out. For all we know, one might even be able to detect different phases of matter: solid, liquid, and gas, just by studying the topological properties of the phase space. I'll report on some work that points in this direction.

Our ol' pal Rashmi is leading a discussion on a math paper this afternoon: 3pm in the usual Rockwell 36.

The paper is on inverse problems and is co-authored by Dr. Cheney. CSU has a few faculty members that study inverse problems so this could be especially helpful to any of you who haven't yet chosen an advisor and want to know more about inverse problems, especially EIT.

Come find out how to see organs using electricity!

Title:
NOSER: An Algorithm for Solving the Inverse Conductivity Problem

Abstract:
The inverse conductivity problem is the mathematical problem that must be solved in order for electrical impedance tomography systems to be able to make images. Here we show how this inverse conductivity problem is related to a number of other inverse problems. We then explain the workings of an algorithm that we have used to make images from electrical impedance data measured on the boundary of a circle in two dimensions. This algorithm is based on the method of
least squares. It takes one step of a Newton’s method, using a constant conductivity as an initial guess. Most of the calculations can therefore be done analytically. The resulting code is named NOSER, for Newton’s One-Step Error Reconstructor. It provides a reconstruction with 496 degrees of freedom. The code does not reproduce the conductivity accurately (unless it differs very little from a constant), but it yields useful images. This is illustrated by images reconstructed from numerical and experimental data, including data from a human chest.

Wanna learn how to read STEM journal articles good from 'more experienced' grad students who read articles gooder? I KNOW I DO. Come to Rockwell 36 at 3pm this Tuesday (10/3) for SIAM's biweekly workshop series! Maybe someday we can do other stuff good too!

Julia coding workshop today at 3pm in Rockwell 36!!!

Julia is essentially a free version of MATLAB, and most of us won't have free access to MATLAB all our lives. It's also very accessible to learn if you're familiar with Python and R, along with MATLAB.

Here's where to download Julia: https://julialang.org/downloads/

*Bring your laptop if you have one!

Check out our LaTeX typsetting workshop this Tuesday at 3pm in Rockwell 36! This SIAM chapter hasn't developed the skills to teach you all how to carve Latin into stone, so let's start with writing your thesis/assignments/dissertations/autobiography in LaTeX!

Thanks for coming out to our organizational meeting last week everybody!!! We have decided that our meetings/workshops will be every two weeks, Tuesdays at 3:00pm. Our next meeting is September 5th! More info to come.

Here's a punny virtual thank you note to all our wonderful members!

SIAM is hosting its first meeting of the semester! Come grab a pre-lunch snack on Thursday and chat about what gets you excited about applied math!
