Happy April Materials Monday!

🌷 Spring blooms = materials science in action 🌷

Notice all the tulips on campus?? Many flowers open and close thanks to hygroscopic composite tissues. When humidity changes, different layers of the petal swell by different amounts and directions (anisotropic swelling), causing the flower to bend and unfold.

No motors. No batteries. Just smart materials responding to the environment.

So, next time you see a tulip on campus, say “hello you beautiful smart material” 🌷😊

A look back at last week’s MSE symposium… thoughtful talks, engaged listeners, and meaningful moments of connection. Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a rich, collaborative space.

See you next year for our 3rd annual symposium!

Happy February all! It’s materials Monday and today we are highlighting our student, Oluwaseun (Seun).

Seun works on Electrochemical PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) mineralization.

Image 2 shows a reactor breaking down PFAS into CO2, H2O, and fluoride ions.

When not in the lab, Seun enjoys cooking and hiking!
