Completed in September 2023, the 299-acre Deer Creek GNA project near Bailey thinned overgrown forest to help protect critical infrastructure that provides clean drinking water to 1.8 million people downstream.

The partnership project with the U.S. Forest Service treated stands of mixed conifer and lodgepole pine to improve forest health, create a firebreak and protect a watershed that feeds into Strontia Springs Reservoir. This was identified as a key area for forest management due to high risk of wildfire that could create drinking water issues. This project is adjacent to 350 acres of past treatments and creates a larger footprint of healthy forests more resilient to environmental impacts like fires, insects and disease.

The Ponderosa Mountain Pine Beetle Task Force will convene its next meeting on September 3, 2026, at 2 p.m. The task force brings together leaders from multiple sectors to develop actions and strategies to strengthen forest health and community resilience.

It's the last day of Colorado's 150th Anniversary Month, and we're still celebrating.

Our forests are one of Colorado's most defining characteristics - places we depend on for clean water and air, for wildlife habitat, for recreation and for scenic vistas. We work with many partners to protect our forests, and today, on Colorado's 150th anniversary, we highlight our work with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

On Aug. 1, we celebrated Colorado's 150th anniversary, so it only seems appropriate that the August Tree of the Month is our state tree, the Colorado Blue Spruce (𝘗𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘢 𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘴).

This conifer is a native Colorado tree, usually found between 6,000 and 11,500 feet, where they often live near mountain streams. These majestic trees grow up to 115 feet tall!

Warning: Blue spruce needles are about 1 inch long and sharp! So to them in the forests, look for brown, 2-4 inch long cones and bluish sharp needles.
