Hello WGS Alumni and Friends. There are some important and exciting changes happening over here at CSU and I will fill you all in soon. Right now, we are working on accepting a cohort of MA students for Fall 2023. Below is the information. Please, please, please help us get our folks into the program. How independent bookstores help in the fight against book banning and why it matters An Atlanta store is one of hundreds of independent booksellers across the country celebrating the freedom to read as schools, universities and public libraries face attempts to ban or restrict books.

What do you say when there is so much to say about a life so fully lived in such a short time. The early departure, the too soon gone, the reminder of the toll, the cost of what it means to live and love as a Black Feminist revolutionary in this world.

Yesterday, today, and always we light a candle on our ancestral altars for the one who taught us what it means to live and love in the truest sense of the word.

Elizabeth Woodworth Scholarship
El Centro is now accepting applications for our Elizabeth Woodworth Scholarship. We are encouraging any students that meet the criteria to apply. The Elizabeth Woodworth Memorial Scholarship awards are based on merit, financial need and the thoughtfulness of personal statements. Awards will range from $2,000-$4,000 for the academic year based on financial need

Student applying for this award, must meet the following criteria:
• Enrolled in any college or major
• First-generation college students
• Enrolled full-time as a continuing student
• Good academic standing with the university
• Demonstrated financial need
• Demonstrated interest in, understanding of, and life experiences with the Latinx culture
• Deadline to Apply: Tuesday, June 1st at 11:59pm

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The Women and Gender Advocacy Center usually hosts an annual Take Back the Night event, which includes a survivor speak out during which people share their stories of sexual assault. Survivors can find empowerment and healing in story sharing, and our office is happy to support the CSU community in this way.

This year, they are hosting a virtual platform for survivors to speak their truths and share their stories. This is the link to the story project page with FAQ's: https://col.st/hdrB0. Interested folks can access a Google doc from there to share their story. The Women and Gender Advocacy Center values survivor choices, so they are welcome to remain completely anonymous if they choose.

Survivor Story Speak-Out WGAC Site

Today we celebrate the Transgender feminists who have and continue to pave the ways in which we think about, exist in, challenge, and resist the incredibly harmful colonial construct of the gender binary. We value all of the Trans and non/binary members of our gender studies community at CSU and across the world. We value your presence and existence in this world.
We also know that acknowledgment is the minimum and encourage and commit to taking action that supports, promotes, protects, and uplifts transgender people and communities especially in the current moment when violent legislation is being passed to exclude Trans people from life affirming medical care and activities. We see you and stand firmly with you.

The College of Natural Sciences just posted a call for their project:
Illustrating Diverse Experiences in STEM: An art and science collaboration

In brief, the call is seeking up to 6 regional artists representing different and intersectional identities to be commissioned to each create a single-frame comic-book-style illustration in high quality digital format which highlights issues faced by people in STEM. Artists will participate in discussions with researchers to ensure that the illustrations are impactful and highlight meaningful areas with the field.

Each illustration will be displayed in buildings on campus, printed on postcards distributed in the College of Natural Sciences, and featured on the CSU Math Department diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) website. The illustration will be debuted, due to COVID-19 restrictions, at a virtual event featuring a panel discussion with STEM researchers at CNS as well as the artists.

Compensation
Artists will be compensated with a commission of $700. The commission includes the expectation to submit an initial script/concept, the initial sketches, the tentative final illustration, and the final illustration as outlined in the timeline; to meet with committee members at least three times as outlined in the timeline; and to have discussions with scientists about the art.

This is a regional call-for-entry and is open to all artists. Please feel encouraged to apply if this call speaks to you and/ or share where appropriate. Your help getting the word out would be greatly appreciated!

Hello CSU people

Kimberly Baker Medina is reaching out about an upcoming webinar.

Kim's husband Ramon is involved in a group called Lucha para Honduras Libre, composed of Hondurans in the US who are working to end the repression, human rights abuses and narco-dictatorship in Honduras. They are hosting a webinar presentation by Dana Frank of UC Santa Cruz. Dr. Frank has extensively researched and written about Honduras, the 2009 coup, and the support that the US provides to the Honduran government. Lucha para Honduras Libre hopes to get the US congress to pass pending legislation which would cut arms and weapons to Honduras, hold the government accountable for human rights abuses, and provide for other sanctions to the Honduran government.
