A research team led by CSU Professor George Wittemyer reunited a four-month-old elephant calf with her family after she wandered into a tourist camp and was separated from the herd 🐘
The calf’s mother had died, but she was welcomed back into the family by her aunts in a display of the species’ social intelligence.
The fieldwork that allowed the researchers to identify the wayward calf and reunite her with her family is critical to the conservation of African elephants.
George’s life’s work has been to study and preserve African elephants across the continent. He and his collaborators have made unprecedented discoveries about the species, including research showing that elephants call each other by name.
