Huge congratulations to Tess Lapray, Blerinda Veliu and Emily Bergman of the Impact MBA at CSU's College of Business, and Colorado State University Political Science Department doctoral candidate Julia Choolwe Munsaka for earning first place at the Hanken School of Economics international HUMLOG Challenge!

The team’s resiliency kits stood out among proposals from 37 teams representing 21 schools in 16 countries. Their kits will empower communities in Mozambique to lead their own disaster recoveries through partnerships with government and NGOs that are already on the ground after disasters hit.

“We designed it in such a way that it would be a hermetically-sealed food bag that contains crop seeds,” Munsaka said.

Veliu added, “The only way people can survive these challenges is if you work with them on ways for them to help themselves.”

When Kelly Haugen and Erica Tardiff were completing their degrees in the GSSE program (now the Impact MBA) they met James Iacino, a College of Business MBA alum who serves as the Executive Chairman of Seattle Fish Company, and the three connected over their shared passion for sustainable seafood.

Recently, Kelly and Erica released the first product from the sustainable fish-feed company they founded thanks to support from Seattle Fish Company, which pre-purchased food and provided a grant that is helping the duo scale up the operations of Nobilis Aqua and continue to push back against invasive carp species that are devastating freshwater ecosystems.

“There are some amazing sustainable solutions being developed throughout the aquaculture feed industry right now,” said Kelly. “With feeds trending towards plant-based and insect-based products, we felt there was still a strong opportunity to innovate around new fishmeal protein alternatives not regularly seen in the market.”
We are proud to be partnering with College of Business - Colorado State University (CSU) as a corporate sustainability fellowship host for its Impact MBA at CSU's College of Business program! This summer we are so excited to welcome Jacob Winkelhake to our team! He will assist in our non-profit strategic planning, customer feedback loops, market research and analysis, and so much more!

Jacob is a Civil Engineer who is pursuing an MBA in corporate sustainability from CSU. His professional interests include renewable energy, waste-water treatment, and cradle-to-cradle design. Jacob grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and attended the University of Kentucky for his undergrad education. Outside of school and work Jacob enjoys cycling, fishing, and archery.

The Impact MBA teaches the next generation of leaders the critical business skills needed to leverage the triple bottom line of people, planet and profit.
Hey Impact MBAers! I am from GSSE cohort 11 and work for a growing startup natural deodorant company in Fort Collins. Due to our growth, we are looking to immediately hire an employee to help with manufacturing and shipping. Hours are flexible and the atmosphere is fun. If anyone is looking for some summer work to hold them over- check it out. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you are [email protected].

🎉 Congratulations to the recipients of the Accelerate Impact Award, ReKaivery Inc. and WellNav, who received $15,000 and $10,000 respectively to fund their ventures created in the CSU Global Social & Sustainable Enterprise MBA (now the Impact MBA at CSU's College of Business). The awards provide startup capital to entrepreneurs from the latest graduating class to help bootstrap their efforts. They’re just one of the many ways the College of Business supports entrepreneurship.

More than one third of all GSSE/Impact graduates from the program’s first nine years have launched ventures since graduation! Introduced this year, the Accelerate Impact Awards provide funding to some of the program’s most promising ventures and help #BizRams use #BusinessForABetterWorld.
You can’t achieve the American Dream if you can’t get financing, and the recent CSU Global Social & Sustainable Enterprise MBA/Impact MBA at CSU's College of Business graduates who showcased their Islamic finance startup, Immpower, during their year-end pitch competition are helping to put that dream within reach for more people. Colorado Edition on KUNC 91.5fm spoke with the December graduates about how the alternative financing model can change the lender/borrower arrangement and strengthen communities.

Sam Goldman from Cohort 9 joined us this week as a guest for our Lunch & Learn series! As GreenBiz's Senior Account Executive, Sam leads on the strategic development, execution, and management of business development activities at the GreenBiz Group – an industry-leading media and events company that advances opportunities at the intersection of business, technology, and sustainability.
Sam believes that sustainability reaching scale will require deep corporate commitments and innovations in climate mitigation, circular systems, and a wholesale re-imagining of the status quo. We also got to hear about his love for mountain biking and live music 🚵
Thank you, Sam for joining us this week.

Several alumni mentioned here!

The Impact MBA has been teaching students how to connect purpose with profit since 2006. Its alumni have been using those lessons to drive efforts for almost as long. Impact MBA Program Director Kathryn Ernst looks at how our alumni are using their skills in industries as diverse as recreation and women’s health. Every year, Colorado State University recognizes "Outstanding Grads" from each College. Last week, Blerinda Veliu (Impact MBA Cohort 14, Social Entrepreneurship Track) was recognized as the College of Business Outstanding Grad!

Blerinda is a Fulbright Scholar from Kosovo. Throughout her time in the Impact MBA, her team worked to start a company that connects NGOs with necessary resources for responding to emergency situations (such as refugee camps) and natural disasters.

Blerinda looks forward to bringing her business, startup, and sustainability expertise back to her family's mushroom business in Kosovo. In addition to that business, Blerinda and her sister have launched a company that produces organic medicinal teas.

You are amazing, Blerinda! Congratulations on this recognition. Take a look at her highlight here: https://biz.source.colostate.edu/outstanding-grad-blerinda-veliu-college-of-business/

Impact MBA student Allie Stauss was voted by her peers to be the graduation speaker at yesterday's ceremony. In addition to speaking during the ceremony, Allie was recognized with the LEAD Award! Faculty members vote to recognize one student from each cohort for their leadership excellence and academic distinction.

Allie's next step in her impact journey will be as the Senior Project Manager, Supply Chain Sustainability for Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. Allie writes in her LinkedIn profile that she "oversees the tactical execution of KDP's sustainable supply chain strategy for coffee and other agricultural raw materials including apple, sugar, and corn to advance progress toward the company's '100% Responsibly Sourced' commitment and its Nature and Livelihoods impact focus areas."

In a College of Business highlight, Allie wrote, "There is no economy without ecology. There are no human resources without natural resources. Businesses can no longer afford to separate marketing and financial acumen from sustainability, which is why I am so grateful and proud to be a graduate of CSU's Impact MBA program. Its interdisciplinary approach uniquely positions us to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges through creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. Personally, I have learned that sustainable business is rooted equally in people skills and technical dexterity and that we will only shift the paradigm when we build inclusive, diverse, action-oriented coalitions. Against the backdrop of a global pandemic, wildfires, and social justice movements, this cohort of the Impact MBA has demonstrated its grit and ambition to make our world kinder, more resilient, and more sustainable. My experience as a member of the Impact MBA community has been invaluable in my pursuit for a values-driven career and I can't wait to see what this group will collectively accomplish in the future."

Congratulations, Allie!

Last summer, Impact MBA student @__kmartinez completed her Corporate Sustainability Fellowship with French regenerative agriculture company Gaïago. Professor @joe.cannon and Katelynn turned her fellowship experience into a "live" case study for Dr. Cannon's Marketing for Social and Sustainable Enterprise class. This morning, 8 student teams presented their recommendations to Gaïago's top management.

We are proud of this applied learning, impact-driven, global, and collaborative educational experience. Bravo and thank you to everyone involved 👏 👏👏👏
