The College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program was started in 1981 by a group of woodworkers in Mendocino county and James Krenov. Since then it has focussed on wood and craftsmanship. It has gained a reputation through its graduates and the quality of their work.

“When I first set foot in the Krenov school, I was like a nestling bird needing constant help and attention. Gradually, I gained more skills and confidence and now am at a point ready to leave the nest with my newfound feathers. This project was a learning opportunity for various new techniques such as veneering, bent lamination, and incorporation of glass. I hope this cabinet will serve as a constant reminder for me that I could accomplish wonderful things as long as I don’t doubt myself and keep trying.

The cabinet is built with post and panel construction with bay laurel and Alaskan Yellow Cedar veneers. The posts feature 5-sided legs made from kwila wood, and the interior of the cabinet is lined with old growth Alaskan Yellow Cedar. The rails and glass frame of the bowed front are bent laminated.”

“The mirror frame is a veneered frieze of boxelder over bent-laminated poplar, framed by bent-laminated cherry. The dovetailed box is figured cherry with a drawer in cherry with madrone sides. The coloration of the boxelder is a result of the tree’s defense mechanism to prevent further damage from the ambrosia beetle.”

“This hybrid stool cabinet originated from a desire to feel close to my pregnant sister this spring. I chose to lean into the idea that my nephew and this piece of furniture would come into the world at the same time, and therefore, this was an invitation to make a piece for him. The piece now serves as a marker of this transition, to honor the birth portal and to celebrate his entrance into the world. The design draws from carving motifs found in historic birthing stools and the archetypal trapezoid shape of many altars and temples. I took these motifs and filtered them through a kid’s lens - thinking about what would have delighted me as a child - textured and graphic, unmistakably kid-sized and a bit absurd. This piece will soon belong to a newborn and will be his to play with when he becomes able to do so - to draw on, build stories around, store treasures inside, and to forget about and circle back to many times over.“
