Yurok Ceremonial Caps returned home from Smithsonian National Museum American Indian yesterday. They are beautiful and ready to dance this summer. Thanks for the work done by NMAI staff Terry and Nancy and our Tribal NAGPRA staff and elders for all their hard work in bringing home nine caps.

First day in Asakusa Tokyo.

Discovering Tokyo, the Asakusa neighborhood. A modern, futuristic city permeated with deep traditions from the past. The streets are crowded and many people wear the kimono, but with trendy twists. The temple is a copy of an Edo temple that was built there but lost to fire, rebuilt and lost again to war.
Within the temple compound is a garden honoring poets. There was a gardener working there, pruning some shrubs. You could see this quiet art form on display in the careful shaping of each tree.
And my favorite discovery was of a “borrowed view”. It is the sculpture of a pair of doves, at knee level in a wall, placed just so that the stones on the other side of the wall completes the picture. it is a peaceful place inspite of the throngs of people nearby.

Ive spent three days cleaning my studio after the mess this big guy made. And WOW did it stink! The first trap we set was too small and it disappeared. Haven’t found that one yet. Fortunately I only lost a tiny bit of silk/wool roving that had dropped on the floor, just a few inches. Now all my felting wool is in sealed containers. Funny thing is, we watched a rat crossing the street a few days ago and didn’t think anything of it.
