Oh, the places we went this week! 🎩📚

We had a Seuss-tastic time celebrating Read Across America Week in our classroom! From fun dress-up days to a special guest reader who brought stories to life with an extra sweet treat, our little learners were all in!

The highlight? Our very own Cat in the Hat skit—full of giggles, silly moments, and lots of personality! And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better… we had a surprise visit from our class baby chick (who’s not so little anymore 🐥💛)!

We even got a little creative with our learning by practicing our spelling words in a hands-on way—“brushing teeth” style! 🪥✨ The kids had a blast making learning come to life in such a fun and silly way.

We also loved spending time reading and taking AR tests alongside a special parent visitor—such a fun way to build confidence and celebrate our growing readers! ❤️📖

Books, laughter, and memories were made all week long. I’d say that’s something worth reading about again and again! ❤️📖

🐣 February in First Grade: Expect the Unexpected! 🐣

While most classrooms were studying the life cycle of a chicken from a book… we decided to do it the first grade way — the LIVE version.

For 21 days in February, our classroom turned into a mini hatchery as we incubated chicken eggs and watched the life cycle of a chicken happen right before our eyes.

We candled the eggs on Day 7, Day 12, and Day 16, and the students were amazed to see the veins, shadows, and tiny growing chicks inside. Let’s just say… trying to keep 1st graders calm while looking at moving eggs is a true teaching skill. 😂

After lots of waiting, wondering, and daily chick check-ins, the big moment finally arrived and our fluffy little scientists hatched! The classroom quickly filled with excited squeals, nonstop chirping, and about 100 questions a minute.

Science standards were met…
Patience was tested…
And our class officially survived “The Great Chick Hatch of February.” 🐥

Hands-on learning at its finest!

This week was SWEET in first grade! 🍫📚✨

We’ve been working hard on the trigraph -dge (because three letters that make one sound deserve some attention 😉). We talked about words like fudge, edge, bridge, and badge — and then we read the passage “The Best Fudge.”

But we didn’t stop there…

We had to do some very serious, very important research. 😎
That’s right — we taste tested REAL fudge to see if it truly was the best! 🍫

The engagement? Through the roof.
The smiles? Huge.
The learning? Stuck like fudge on our fingers.

There’s nothing like mixing phonics + reading + a little chocolate to make those brain connections strong.

Today was proof that learning is always better with a little sweetness on the edge. 💛🍫

Before Christmas Break, our students had the task of completing their Winter iReady Diagnostic for Reading & Math. These assessments are very important as it shows the progress each student has or hasn't made. This data drives our future instruction, so every child's need is met. I set the bar high! I gave them my heartfelt speech about the importance, but most of all how much we are so very proud of them no matter what! YALL... our babies GREW and GREW tremendously! We are so very proud of the progress each student has made as they all had a mountain to climb! I can only imagine the growth they will make by our next iReady Diagnostic Assessments!

🔥 We had another amazing Community Helper come visit with us! North Central Volunteer Fire Department! Thank you Michael Wareing and Garen Richmond. 🚒🧑🏻‍🚒

🦃 We enjoyed our very own Thanksgiving meal courtesy of our hardworking cafeteria ladies!

🎈 We had our own version of the Macy's Day Thanksgiving Parade.

🚔 Last Tuesday we had a very special visitor to kick off our unit on Community Helpers! 🚨

Thank you to Joshua Thames and the Scott County Sherrif's Department for coming out to talk and visit with our students (PreK - 1st Grade). They really had a great time! ♥️
