What happens when thin invades thick?

Years ago, I posted on this phenomenon, as it has been part of our science box on fractals. But I had to add some fascinating twists!

This mesmerizing branching pattern happens because of an instability called "viscous fi*****ng." When a low-viscosity fluid (air or dye) forces its way into a high-viscosity fluid (glue and dye), it creates these beautiful fractal patterns.

Because air is thinner (less viscous) than glue, it forces its way through the fluid in stunning, organic fractal patterns instead of pushing it evenly. Same with the thin dye through the thick glue.

It's thin invading thick.

A most satisfying home science experiment.
