UFT Queens Chapter Spotlight: Newtown High School (24Q455) At Newtown HS, a chapter of over 160 members shows the power of solidarity and teamwork every day. Led by Chapter Leader Abby Mathes, with Delegates Lisa Jimenez & Tara Woebbe Alcaraz, Para Rep Marta Black, and UFT Teacher Center Coach Gretchen Maier, the chapter celebrated a major accomplishment this year with the opening of their UFT Teacher Center. This expanded access to quality professional development for members.
Members have also stood strong in advocating to Fix Tier 6, with both Tier 4 and Tier 6 educators working together toward change. Adding to their strong sense of community, members created a shared playlist—“Newtown UFT 2025-2026”—to connect on a more personal level. For Newtown, the UFT means stability, unity, and always having each other’s backs.
