I couldn’t agree with this more strongly. It’s something I think about, practice and work on every day.

Proper Body Structure. Correct Body mechanics. Timing. Maximum efficiency, with minimal strength and effort. Correct usage of distance.

It all becomes so important throughout our training, but especially as we get older.

You cannot stop. It’s going to hurt.
It hurts when you don’t move, and it hurts when you do. This is the cycle of life. Just keep grinding.

Training is the Way!

The Engine of Longevity in Okinawan Karate

One thing has always fascinated me about Okinawan karate: what happens when the body begins to change, more so now that I'm feeling that change myself. Speed slows, flexibility decreases, recovery takes longer, and the physical qualities that made certain techniques easy in youth are no longer available in the same way.

So what happens to a martial artist then? If our definition of ability depends primarily on athleticism, the answer is uncomfortable.
Classical Okinawan karate offers another possibility. Perhaps mastery isn't about preserving the abilities of youth. Perhaps it's about learning to produce more with less.

The older I get, the more I appreciate the emphasis on structure, alignment, connection, and efficient movement found in the traditional arts. Power doesn't always come from greater muscular effort. A well-aligned structure supports what strength alone can't, and proper use of the body reduces unnecessary strain while maximizing leverage. Timing compensates for speed, positioning compensates for strength, and understanding compensates for what physical attributes inevitably lose over the decades.

This is one reason kata is so much more than a collection of fighting techniques. Every time we practice, we return to the same questions: can we maintain structure, move without unnecessary tension, transition without losing balance, generate power without forcing it?

In that sense, kata becomes a kind of daily conversation with the body. What worked effortlessly twenty years ago may require more attention today. A stance may need adjustment, a movement may need to become smaller, a transition may require more deliberate control. That isn't a failure of practice. That is the practice.

One of the great strengths of a classical martial art is that it gives us something to keep working on after youthful athleticism fades. The goal isn't to move like a twenty-year-old at eighty. The goal is to have spent sixty years learning how to move like yourself; to rely on structure over muscular effort, coordination over brute strength, and timing over raw speed.

Longevity itself can be viewed as part of martial mastery. Not because simply growing old proves someone is a great martial artist; it doesn't. But if a method allows a practitioner to keep training, adapting, and finding useful movement through the decades, it has demonstrated something important: it has outlasted youth.

A young practitioner shows what the body can do at its physical peak. An older practitioner has the chance to show something different: how much of that ability can be retained through understanding.

We aren't training to remain young. We're training to remain capable.

The real test of a martial art isn't how it looks when the practitioner is twenty-five. It's whether they can still find something meaningful in it at seventy-five.

That is where I stood for many days after I arrived just after the second Tower fell.

I have the gold shield and mask on with my men that I supervised. Stop today and say a prayer, or do something nice for someone else. Don’t take credit. Just do it for the sake of others.

We were a united nation that day and the days that followed. Despite what some say today. People loved harder and worked more to help each other. They did it because that’s what New Yorkers have always done.

I’m grateful for all of you.

See you in class.
