The beauty of working 20 years in culinary is having colleagues from around the world share their culture with me. From them I continue to learn new flavors and experiences in the kitchen. My colleagueJohn Alfy Edward who is now extended family has shared so much of his Egyptian homeland over the years. His Mama once visited from Cairo and prepared a Michelin-star-worthy feast that I still crave! When I happened upon a recipe for Goulash by Book of Dishes, I was excited to give it a go! I added cumin to the spices, used a mix of turkey and beef, added cilantro with the herbs and just a dash of nutmeg to the eggs and milk. We enjoyed with simply dressed field greens, tomato, cucumber and spiced yogurt. Hopefully John will enjoy as much as my family did, I represented the culture well and most importantly Mama will approve 💚 استمتع

Like a lot of people, good food is central to my family’s traditions. I am blessed to have a large extended family on both sides of my tree with a long lineage of phenomenal cooks. The lessons learned are countless. One dish stands out as particularly sacred and that is Banana Pudding. My Aunt Ann’s remains supreme in Maryland while my Aunt Joyce holds court in North Carolina. I learned this week that the beloved dish we revere is something altogether different for other families. For some it does not start with vanilla custard prepared on the stove, layered with fresh bananas, and finished with whipped meringue toasted to golden perfection in the oven. For some, the dessert starts from a instant box and is served cold completed with whipped “topping”. 😊 So I ask if you partake, which is your preference? And what food tradition do you hold sacred in your family?

can be deliciously enjoyed with a little prep of fresh vegetables. A trio of mushrooms, paired with onions, garlic, red pepper, ginger and water chestnuts add an explosion of flavors and textures. So much so, you won’t miss the meat! Finished with a Korean BBQ sauce alongside steamed rice and roasted broccoli tossed in sesame oil, your Meatless Monday starts the week off with a bang!

It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. Today I am saying a grocery store mistake leads to really good waffles 😜 I intended to buy self-rising flour and discovered I actually purchased self-rising corn meal instead. Decided to give cornmeal waffles a go. This is what cooking should be - having fun in the kitchen. Experimenting. Trial and error. Thankfully, today was trial and success!

Once again the internet has piqued my curiosity. And once again the internet is undefeated! I gave the pickle-juice brined fried chicken a go. The hype is deserved! And the next-day chicken sandwich is a real contender. Perhaps The Bestie Brunch needs to be amended to include Chicken & Waffles 🤔 Recipe follows. Give it a go!

There is something about putting food in a bowl that heightens the dining experience for me. The blending of complimenting textures, flavors and colors make me happy! Had you told me I’d want Spam in my bowl, I would have told you you were crazy. And yet here I am with a salute to the beloved Japanese Hawaiian treat; my take on a Musubi bowl 😋
