Pacific University’s Amy M. Young Award in Creative Writing

Deadline to enter contest is this Friday!

Aim: To recognize the quality of creative writing produced by emerging writers at Pacific University.

Given to the best submissions of creative work produced by students taking creative writing courses during spring semester 2012, fall semester 2012 or spring semester 2013. (This includes majors, minors and students in other majors studying in introductory or advanced creative writing courses.) Open to fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. Judged by an outside writer/reviewer.

1st Prize: $200 in each genre (fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction)

1 Honorable Mention in each genre.

1st prize poem, story and creative nonfiction will be published in Plum (Pacific’s Literature by Undergraduates Magazine).

How to Submit:

Students may submit up to 3 poems and 20 pages of creative nonfiction or fiction. (Only one submission in each category.) Poems must be submitted in a single set, with one cover sheet. Only one story or nonfiction piece may be submitted.

Format: Each submission must have a cover sheet with the following information:

1) Name of writer.

2) Writer’s email address.

3) The genre of the work. (Fiction, creative nonfiction or poetry.)

4) Title

5) Name of creative writing course and semester in which work was produced. (The piece must be written for a creative writing course at Pacific in 2012 (spring or fall) or spring 2013.)

The author’s name must not appear anywhere on the pages of the work. Number all pages.

Put your submission in a 9 x 11 inch envelope and mark on it “Creative Writing Competition”

Submit to: Prof. Kathlene Postma’s mailbox at Bates House.

Given to the best submissions of critical writing produced by students in literature courses during 2012 (spring or fall) or spring 2013. (This includes majors, minors, and students in other majors taking literature courses.) Judged by an outside scholar/reviewer.

1st Prize: $200
2nd Prize: $50
1 honorable mention

1st Prize essay will be published in Plum (Pacific’s Literature by Undergraduates Magazine).

Students may submit one critical essay up to 20 pages in length.

Paid Editing and Publishing Internship at Pacific U for 2012-2013

The Editorial/Publications Intern works in the Office of Marketing & Communications in University Advancement. The intern reports directly to the Senior Writer, as a key member of the Pacific magazine and Pacific News newsletter staff.

The intern will also work with the Associate Vice President of Marketing & Communications, and web, design and media relations staff members in support of the communications, public relations and marketing functions of the University. In addition, the intern helps coordinate with the alumni and development offices to support the overall advancement goals of the University.

$10 an hour

4 to 6 hours a week

Summer (mid-June to mid-August to start) edit/publish internship or volunteer opportunity. Publishing Assistant to Writer Lois Leveen

The internship would focus on assisting with promotion of my novel, The Secrets of Mary Bowser, to various niche audiences (you can learn more about the book at www.loisleveen.com). The novel is published by William Morrow/HarperCollins, and their internal publicist and marketing leads are handling much of the mainstream promotion. The intern will work under my direct supervision on contacting media/social networking/booksellers/event venues for niche audiences beyond the scope of what Morrow is covering. In the changing book industry, even major publishers are working under highly constrained budgets, and the work in which the intern will be involved will offer a great learning experience in how to be creative and entrepreneurial in book promotion. My ideal would be to have an intern for approximately 5 hours per week, but I'm flexible. Portland area based.
