FROM LUCIFER TO SATAN
“12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!” (Isaiah 14:12)
God made His angels en masse (altogether.) Hebrews 1:7 reads:
“7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.”
Of course, the angel Lucifer was included. Ezekiel 28:7 describes him as the “anointed cherub that covereth.” Cherub is the singular form of cherubim. All angels were made righteous and holy. And Ezekiel 28:15 adds:
“15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.”
It is important to keep in mind that Lucifer was created flawless and lacking iniquity. In other words, God did not directly make Satan or the devil which are evil. He made Lucifer in a state of holiness as were all angels. We are not told the length of time that Lucifer remained holy faithful to God.
The Word of God provides us with an overview of the duty of cherubim. Here is their first mention in scripture:
“24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life” (Genesis 3:24.)
When God drove Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden, he stationed cherubim at the tree of life to guard it from man ever returning to it. If it were possible for man to regain access to it, eating its fruit would have cursed Adam and Eve to eternal life in a state of sin.
Ezekiel described Lucifer thusly:
“12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire” (Ezekiel 28:12-14.)
Lucifer must have been a glorious sight to behold. His “covering” consisted of precious stones such as the diamond, emerald, and gold. His beauty was perfect and his wisdom without lacking.
The Fall – From Lucifer to Satan
What happened to Lucifer? How did he descend from holy and righteous to an adversary to his Creator? Ezekiel 28:15 declares that iniquity was found in him. Verse 17 elaborates by saying:
“17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.”
It seems that Lucifer’s incredible beauty was at the heart of his fall. And his immense wisdom was severely marred by his brightness. (The brilliance of his covering of precious stones and gold was instrumental in the development of pride.) This combination facilitated the development of narcissism in Lucifer. It is obvious by the text of Ezekiel 28 that God does not credit Lucifer’s extreme beauty and manifold wisdom in any way as contributing to the development of a narcissistic attitude. In other words, Lucifer could not have accused God of contributing to his downfall by making him perfectly beautiful.
When Lucifer crossed the line from holiness and service to an enemy of God, he determined to dethrone his Maker. Isaiah 14:12-14 reads:
“12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”
Lucifer became self-willed fivefold saying “I will…”:
(A) Ascend into heaven.
(B) Exalt my throne above the stars (angels) of God.
(C) Sit also upon the mount of the congregation.
(D) Ascend above the heights of the clouds.
(E) Be like the most High.
Satan Was Instrumental in God’s Overall Plan for Man
Nothing that ever happens in life is due to happenstance. In other words, because God IS God, NOTHING ever occurs because of a lack of foresight, inadequate planning, events out of control, underestimation of something, lack of power or understanding, etc. Isaiah 46:9-10 reads:
“9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.”
Whatever happens – and let me make this abundantly clear – WHATEVER HAPPENS does happen because God performs His counsel “after the counsel of His own will” (Ephesians 1:11) and all at His pleasure and determination.
The Genesis 1 creation was undertaken by God to undergird His crowning creation – MAN! Everything was made FOR man – to SUPPORT man. Look at 1 Peter 1:19-20:
“19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.”
Now couple this scripture with Revelation 13:8:
“8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”
(The Lamb was both foreordained and slain before the foundation of the world. This was all in anticipation of the God planned arrival of Satan who triggered the events that led to man’s fall. And as you will read further on, this strategy was planned by God to prepare the kingdom of God only for those sinful humans who out of love and freely by their choice would serve God for eternity.)
Man in the image and likeness of God was in God’s determined will eternally. God could have proceeded in one of two ways:
(A) Make man LACKING in free will to blindly obey or follow.
(B) Make man providing him with a choice to FREELY disobey if so desired.
Choice A provides God with mindless automatons (man,) robots who are forced through a lack of free will to disobey OR choice B giving man a conscious choice to freely decide for himself. If God had chosen the former, it could always be argued that said obedience eliminates love. Love “forced” or “coerced” or provided without man freely deciding for himself to give it IS NEITHER LOVE NOR FREE. However, if the latter were to be put in play, man could SELF-DETERMINE, i.e. through his own free will to obey making that love TRUE.
God chose the latter. Man was given free, conscious choice to decide for himself whether to obey God or disobey Him. This God-ordained decision required man to fall into sin. This in turn required God provide an enemy to Himself to turn man’s heart and mind from his Creator to Satan (opponent, enemy.) It also necessitated the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world which is THE TEST to allow man to decide for himself (believe the gospel and obey Acts 2:38) to become reconciled to his Creator OR to disobey and remain freely apart from God and take up eternal residence in the lake of fire.
(Many Christians ponder in their minds why did God provide for the existence of Satan if He knew that he would “turn” on Him. Why did God allow for the existence of evil? The above explanation is the reason. As being holy and righteous, it is against His nature to coerce any creature’s obedience. His love “compels” Him to allow man to decide a fate worse than death if that is his desire. (It is against God’s nature to make blind, obedient robots.)
WRAPPING UP
Satan was a crucial “chess piece” on God’s earthly chessboard to prepare man to be eternal dwellers in the kingdom of God. And as with Egypt’s pharaoh who hardened his heart to keep the children of Israel his captors, God DID NOT violate his (Satan’s) will. This is the mystery of God that man in his finite knowledge and wisdom will never be able to understand. How that God can achieve His goal and yet not violate any of His creature’s free will.
So too God can judge and eternally punish the devil for his rebellion and turmoil that he was the cause of on earth. Lucifer become Satan made the choice to rebel. He has had thousands of years to thwart God’s plan for man. Knowing that He planned to redeem man through a man-child, Satan conceived a plan to contaminate the bloodline of Adam’s seed. This was attempted by certain chosen angels called sons of God (Genesis 6:1-4) mating with the daughters of men. Of course, the Lamb of God (Genesis 22:8, John 1:29, 36) would have been powerless to redeem sinful man by the shedding of blood because that blood would have been hopelessly polluted. Human offspring would have been half-human, making it impossible for the birth of a completely human Messiah.
At this point in time, Satan has but a short time remaining:
“12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time” (Revelation 12:12.)
Here is Satan’s fate:
“10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever” (Revelation 20:10.)
