JESUS ALONE HAS THE WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE

“40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40.)

There are a handful of TV commercials that made an impression on me during the long-ago past days of over the air analog transmissions. Here is one that I find appropriate for illustration of today’s Bible lesson (E.F. Hutton, late 1970s):

A passenger on an airline speaks to another passenger across the aisle from him, saying…

“Now that looks like a very interesting situation. My broker is really enthusiastic about it. What does your broker say?”

“Well, my broker is E.F. Hutton, and E.F. Hutton says…”

Every passenger within earshot of these gentlemen suddenly stops what they are doing, comes to attention and listens attentively to the answer of the E.F. Hutton client.

I find this old television commercial apropos (appropriate) for application to the message of the salvation of Jesus Christ. On one memorable occasion Jesus found Himself in a contentious conversation with the Jews. He had healed a man who had an infirmity for thirty-eight years (John 5:1-5.) But it was the sabbath. It was for this reason the Jews sought to accuse Jesus.

“10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed…18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God” (John 5:10, 18.)

John 5:40 is immediately preceded by these words of Jesus:

“38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. 39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:38-39.)

Here is where I am equating the words of the E.F. Hutton client to Jesus’ words, i.e. accusation, recorded in John 5:40. The Jews should have immediately ceased their accusation and ignorance displayed before Jesus, become silent and listen attentively.

One day Jesus declared to the disciples (NOT the twelve) that they would have to eat His flesh and drink His blood (John 6:51-65.) What was their reaction?

“66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him” (John 6:66.)

Peter answered:

“68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life” (John 6:68.)

I have always believed and said that what Jesus said in John 5:40 are the absolute saddest words He had ever spoken. Here it is again:

“40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40.)

Many people had rather become enraptured by the words of the Word of faith televangelists such as T.D. Jakes, Creflo Dollar, Joyce Meyer, etc. and those of fake Christian Oprah Winfrey and popular actors and singers like pseudo–Christians Denzel Washington and recently deceased singer Dolly Parton. But 2 Timothy 2:22 says:

“22 FLEE also youthful lusts: but FOLLOW righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

People are pursuing the popular doctrine of prosperity and materialism and are totally blind to eternal life. Jesus taught:

“19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal” (Matthew 6:19-20.)

Financial brokers are determined to give their clients a great return on investment. That was the purpose of that old E.F. Hutton TV commercial. But think soberly about this. What greater return on investment can anyone obtain than eternal life? Jesus asks this rhetorical question:

“36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36)

WRAPPING UP

We, ALL of us, have an appointed time in this life (Hebrews 9:27.) None of us know or will ever learn when this time or date is. Jesus advises:

“44 Therefore BE YE ALSO READY: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh” (Matthew 24:44.)

BEAUTY DOES NOT COME IN A BOTTLE

“30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window” (2 Kings 9:30.)

Hollywood is inarguably the largest and most prominent advertiser for the jewelry and cosmetics industry. It veritably dictates to the public what is fashionable for women wear and apply to the body such as the lips, cheeks, toenails and fingernails, and eyes. As a matter of fact, various cosmetics manufacturers have the advantage of free advertising of their products through Hollywood.

We can reasonably say that both Hollywood and the cosmetics industries have set the standard of beauty for the American woman. Cosmetics are universally advertised through movies and television programming. It is unavoidable. But this is all part of the evil world system. The scripture says this of the world:

“17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you” (2 Corinthians 6:17.)

Also, we have 1 John 2:15-16:

“15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

Unfortunately, the average girl and woman is at a distinct disadvantage at being protected from Hollywood and television makeup programming. And we are all, not just women, helpless victims of this advertising and it is publicly seen all around us from the school system, workplace, church, sports, and throughout the average neighborhood.

But we should all be reminded that cosmetics are the primary products for two professions – circus clowns and the ubiquitous (everywhere present) pr******te or harlot. Think about it. No woman wishes to think or entertain in her mind that the makeup she uses is the unquestioned trademark for two, shall we say, “professions” lacking dignity and/or any moral compass.

Unwittingly women have been made or subtly coerced into being willing victims for what the makeup industry and Hollywood have defined as beauty. And they have not been given any say-so or the opportunity to evaluate this man-defined standard of beauty.

Would it be reasonable to think that God has a say-so or an alternative standard of beauty for the woman? Or did He leave it up to man, His creature, to make up his own standard? As the all-knowing inventor of mankind, you would logically think that God made the male and the female as His all-knowing nature and standard think appropriate to conform to His desire.

When creation, including man, was complete, God made the following assessment:

“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day” (Genesis 1:31.)

Everything on both man and woman were declared to be complete, nothing lacking. Both were found to be whole and beautiful in His eyes. As a matter of fact, Adam and Eve were prototypes of masculine and feminine beauty. The woman’s eyes were declared to be perfect, not needing any type of lining or shadowing for any type of enhancement. The pronouncement “very good” means a standard of completeness and beauty that could not be improved upon.

When you think soberly about makeup, it in a not so subtle a manner declares that God left room for improvement. That thought is an insult!

What do the scriptures say? 1 Peter 3:4 reads:

“4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”

Womanly beauty is defined more from that which cannot be seen by the naked eye than any outward appearance. The “hidden man of the heart” and “the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit” is more important to God than face, fingernail, and toenail paint.

“4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation” (Psalm 149:4.)

Note that God WILL NOT beautify His people with eyeshadow enhancement and rouge for the cheeks. Women who are meek God will make beautiful with salvation. And notice that meekness rather than face painting again plays a prominent role in beauty.

“17 I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee” (1 Chronicles 29:17.)

The beauty that God desires of His people lies on the inside. There is a famous saying that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This is so true. Different peoples – different cultures – have varying standards of beauty. What Americans find beautiful is perceived as ugly by some people groups. But inner beauty is perceived universally.

“40 And furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a messenger was sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou didst wash thyself, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst thyself with ornaments” (Ezekiel 23:40.)

“30 And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life” (Jeremiah 4:30.)

“30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window” (2 Kings 9:30.)

Consider the light that Ezekiel 23:40 and Jeremiah 4:30 portray the woman who decks herself in ornaments and tons of “face paint” in. These passages scream HARLOT” at the top of their lungs. And note the objective of the jewels and makeup – for the woman to make herself “fair,” seductive, beautiful, to her lovers. This is hardly a godly pursuit.

This is the universal Jezebel look. It is as ungodly as a woman can become.

WRAPPING UP

Contrary to what the cosmetics industry and Hollywood think or have you believe, beauty does not come in a bottle or through appliances or attachments for the eyes to make a woman more attractive. Cosmetics make a woman look fake – artificial and jewelry make her look like female gods and seductresses. It detracts from the godly woman God made her to be and introduces s*x into the equation – think pr******te or harlot.

“27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:27.)

Cosmetics and jewelry are spots and wrinkles that are among the world’s ungodly attractions. Do not be devil-deceived into believing that God will settle for anything less than the standard He has set. There will be two opposed classes of people when He returns for His church – the holy and the unholy. These classes will be easily distinguishable internally and through the outward appearance. And make no mistake about it, a man and a woman who has been truly born again will NEVER be mistaken outwardly as unholy. NEITHER will look like Jezebel.

WASHING AWAY YOUR SINS THROUGH WATER BAPTISM

“16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16.)

Acts 22:16 is a part of the apostle Paul’s testimony of his conversion from Judaism to the Christian faith – the “road to Damascus” testimony.” For context, this is how it began:

“3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day…14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth. 15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard” (Acts 22:3, 14-15.)

How many believers have ever thought of the water baptism of Acts 2:38 as being the removal of past acts of sins through the washing away by water? Think about this comparison to the physical removal of the filth of the body by soap and water. But isn’t this an apt metaphor for a normal personal act that we all perform daily?

Let us NOT confuse sin, namely nature, with repeated acts of sin, i.e. sins. Psalm 51:5 says:

“5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

This is Adam’s inherited nature we all acquire at conception. We are one and all free from acts of sin (sins) at birth. It is only when we begin to grow that we commit acts of sin in thought and deed. This is the reason Acts 2:38 says:

“…be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the REMISSION of SINS…”

Acts 22:16 allows us to understand “remission” as being a “washing away of sins.” A washing away is a spiritual removal that can only be accomplished through the power inherent in the name of Jesus Christ.

Let us now turn our attention to Peter’s first epistle (letter):

“20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were SAVED BY WATER. 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:20-21.)

A global washing away was first performed by God through a massive flood brought on by the unthinkable evil initiated by the act of the sons of God having s*xual relations with the daughters of men (Genesis 6:1-4):

“5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart” (Genesis 6:5-6.)

The Holy Ghost through Peter categorized this global flood as an Old Testament shadow of the New Testament fulfillment, i.e. “like figure.” And notice that 1 Peter 3:21 is careful to mention that water baptism is not to be confused with “the putting away of the filth of the flesh.” This is due to the physical nature of washing as relatable to the spiritual act of the removal of sins. The global flood can be thought of as the washing away of the physical contamination brought about by the emergence of the incredibly evil giants (Nephilim) and their negative influence on humanity. Flood waters literally swept or washed away all remnants of the giants.

The apostle Paul’s water baptism is literally called a washing away of his sins. Now do you begin to see why the name of Jesus Christ must be verbally invoked? (And conversely why calling on the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost is ineffective.) Acts 4:12 reads:

“12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

Salvation is efficacious SOLELY THROUGH the name of Jesus Christ and wholly meaningless by calling on the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Realizing the truth behind water baptism brings to the surface that despite how ignorant trinitarian theologians make light of water baptism relative to repentance, baptism ALONG WITH repentance is a necessary requirement for salvation! Water baptism according to a right dividing of the scriptures (2 Timothy 2:15) places it on an equal footing with repentance.

Can you imagine being taken to the kingdom of God at Jesus’ second advent (coming) not having your sins WASHED AWAY? That means God allowing a person into His holy kingdom carrying unrepentant sins. This can happen in one of two ways:

(A) Through neglecting to be water baptized at all.
(B) Through omission of the name of Jesus Christ being called out, i.e. in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Either one of the above scenarios will prevent the fulfillment of Ephesians 5:27:

“27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”

An unfulfilled water baptism (spot or wrinkle) through disobedience to Acts 2:38 guarantees eternal doom to any person at Christ’s return. Jesus WILL NOT present such a contaminated person to Himself. Such neglect will ensure an eternal post in the lake of fire.

WRAPPING UP

No one can have his or her sins washed away through any name OTHER THAN Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38) OR Acts 19:5. No title is a viable substitute.

Have you been washed?

NO ONE NEEDS TO KNOW HEBREW AND GREEK IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE SCRIPTURES

“15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15.)

The Bible – the sacred scriptures – was written in three languages, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The major portion of the Old Testament was written in Hebrew with a small percentage in Aramaic. The New Testament was written in koine (common) Greek. Fortunately, we have available to us English translations.

(After much study, I have arrived at the conclusion that the King James Version of the Bible is superior to all other English versions. This is my version of choice.)

The King James translators were godly men who were uniquely gifted in ancient languages having had no hidden agenda. One feature of this version is that the translators chose Middle English instead of today’s modern English which was then (1611) available. This is the reason why it has pronouns such as ye, thou, saith, etc. And finally, I greatly appreciate that Middle English distinguishes the singular pronoun “you” from the plural pronoun “ye” (modern English renders the singular and the plural identically, i.e. you that can breed confusion.)

Many Christians are under the false impression that a knowledge of the ancient languages will facilitate biblical understanding. After having learned New Testament Greek and Old Testament Hebrew several decades ago, I discovered this not to be true. I also found that the greatest tool available to any Christian for understanding the scriptures is scriptural context. The author of the scriptures namely the Holy Ghost does not use the Hebrew and Greek vocabulary in a rigid manner which is to say to utilize words in an unnatural way where there is no variation in the English word translation.

For instance, New Testament Greek has three words that are all translated into the one English word “love.” But the significance of the Greek word used in any specific book, chapter, and verse will vary depending on the what the Holy Ghost has in mind. In other words, the correct English meaning will depend on what the Holy Ghost wishes to convey through the context.

As an example, scholars have settled that the Greek word “agape” (love) will always convey the highest state of the love that can be displayed which is of God – unselfish. What is of greatest value for any Bible student from beginner to the advanced scholar is the tool of context. The Holy Ghost may instead choose to use the Greek word “phileo” (brotherly love) but intending the significance of “agape love” by the context utilized. Therefore, the Holy Ghost significance of any Bible text is, in no order, dependent on context, context, and CONTEXT! Scriptural context and scriptural context ALONE determine the meaning of ANY passage.

Any approach other than that of context forces the Holy Ghost into a fixed state of the recording of scripture, reducing Him into the mindless state or role of that of a robot – an automaton. That makes the Holy Ghost a veritable slave to the Hebrew and Greek vocabulary.

This is the purpose of any good translation, or it should be. No believer should be made to be dependent on having some knowledge however rudimentary of Hebrew and Greek. There is one person who has a YouTube Bible channel who ignorantly hinges the understanding of the scriptures to the actual Hebrew and Greek text.

But isn’t this the purpose of all English translations? To provide a translation of the scriptures for those believers who have no interest in learning the Hebrew and Greek? As I stated above, the King James translators had a thorough understanding of the origin biblical languages, and this version can be trusted.

Do not allow any so-called scholar to dupe you into believing that you cannot come to an understanding of the scriptures without any dependence on Hebrew and Greek. Oh, by the way, do not give up your right to not only think for yourself, but alienate yourself from the Holy Ghost to aid in the understanding of the Bible. John 14:26 reads:

“26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

WRAPPING UP

Here is a summarization of coming to an understanding of the Bible in the suggested order of use:

(A) Holy Ghost.
(B) Context.

WORD AND WISDOM ARE OPERATIONS OF GOD

“6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all” (1 Corinthians 12:6)

The Spirit of God is an enigma to the carnal and finite human mind. It is so much so that many theologians have devised a doctrine known as the trinity, i.e. triune or three-in-one, to explain Him. Other theologians known as Jehovah’s Witnesses view the Father, Jehovah, as the almighty God and relegate the Son to being merely a mighty god. These groups and others have gotten themselves trapped in what I call a “theological quagmire.”

Theology, the singular collective term categorizing the curricula taught by Bible colleges and seminaries, is completely man-devised and alien to what is taught in the scriptures. Among other things, it seeks to “fill in the gaps” in the limited and non-Holy Ghost revealed knowledge of the nature of God amongst theologians using unscriptural words and phrases.

Theologians are deaf, dumb, and blind to several scriptures that are crucial towards unlocking the infinite majesty of God. One such powerful passage is that of 1 Corinthians 12:6. Another is the biblical use of a form of the word “manifest” in 1 Corinthians 12:7 and 1 Timothy 3:16. These scriptures read, respectively:

“7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal” (1 Corinthians 12:7.)

“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory” (1 Timothy 3:16.)

The Bible-centered terms and phrases “diversities of operations” or just operations and “manifestation” should be central to the variety of operations of God in place of the trinitarians’ preferred and “go to” word, “person.” As 1 Corinthians 12:6 says, God reveals Himself through diversities or multiple differences of operations or manifestations, NOT persons. Diversities of operations or manifestations lend themselves perfectly to the numerically singular Spirit of God agreeing perfectly with Deuteronomy 6:4 that reads:

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.”

Very familiar diversities of operations or manifestations are the redemptive words Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Father is the begetter or one who sired the Son of God (Lamb,) Son is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the word, and Holy Ghost is the Spirit of God who empowers the believer. Now we must add to these familiar terms Word and Wisdom. Most believers are well acquainted with the Word through John 1:1-3:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

Along with John 1:1-3 there is Psalm 33:6:

“6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.”

Not nearly as familiar is “wisdom.” This diversity of operation or manifestation is thoroughly described in Proverbs 8. Verse 11 introduces wisdom saying:

“11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it” (Proverbs 8:11.)

Now note what verse 22 says:

“22 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.”

Let the following marinate in your Holy Ghost-filled spirit. John 1:1 states the Word IS God while Psalm 33:6 records that LORD (Jehovah) possessed the word through the phrase “word OF the LORD.” Finally, Proverbs 8:22 says that the LORD POSSESSED wisdom “in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.” This is eternal possession of an operation or manifestation of God.

Now hold onto your hats for a further revelation. Look at 1 Corinthians 1:24:

“24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.”

Christ is not only the power of God, but the wisdom of God too. Note the following comprehensive description of wisdom:

“23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. 24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: 26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. 27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: 28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: 29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: 30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him” (Proverbs 8:23-30.)

In summarization, wisdom was:

(A) Before the mountains were settled.
(B) Present when the heavens were prepared.
(C) Set up from everlasting or ever the earth was.
(D) Existed when there were no depths.

Is not this what John 1:1 declares?

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1.)

The common and usual understanding of “beginning” CANNOT be applied to John 1:1. “Beginning” points directly to Word and the Word IS God. God IS NOT associated with time as we normally understand “beginning.” The context of John 1:1 defines “beginning” as eternity. Here is what Isaiah 57:15 says of eternity:

“For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”

“Inhabiteth eternity” plainly declares the Spirit of God as being BY VERY NATURE, eternal!

WRAPPING UP

No one will ever be able to reasonably understand the doctrine of the trinity while it is dependent upon God existing as a person AND simultaneously as three distinct persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost, all within one Spirit essence. This is entirely spiritual gobbledygook that demeans the Spirit of God making Him a veritable laughingstock among other religions.

FROM LUCIFER TO SATAN

“12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!” (Isaiah 14:12)

God made His angels en masse (altogether.) Hebrews 1:7 reads:

“7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.”

Of course, the angel Lucifer was included. Ezekiel 28:7 describes him as the “anointed cherub that covereth.” Cherub is the singular form of cherubim. All angels were made righteous and holy. And Ezekiel 28:15 adds:

“15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.”

It is important to keep in mind that Lucifer was created flawless and lacking iniquity. In other words, God did not directly make Satan or the devil which are evil. He made Lucifer in a state of holiness as were all angels. We are not told the length of time that Lucifer remained holy faithful to God.

The Word of God provides us with an overview of the duty of cherubim. Here is their first mention in scripture:

“24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life” (Genesis 3:24.)

When God drove Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden, he stationed cherubim at the tree of life to guard it from man ever returning to it. If it were possible for man to regain access to it, eating its fruit would have cursed Adam and Eve to eternal life in a state of sin.

Ezekiel described Lucifer thusly:

“12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire” (Ezekiel 28:12-14.)

Lucifer must have been a glorious sight to behold. His “covering” consisted of precious stones such as the diamond, emerald, and gold. His beauty was perfect and his wisdom without lacking.

The Fall – From Lucifer to Satan

What happened to Lucifer? How did he descend from holy and righteous to an adversary to his Creator? Ezekiel 28:15 declares that iniquity was found in him. Verse 17 elaborates by saying:

“17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.”

It seems that Lucifer’s incredible beauty was at the heart of his fall. And his immense wisdom was severely marred by his brightness. (The brilliance of his covering of precious stones and gold was instrumental in the development of pride.) This combination facilitated the development of narcissism in Lucifer. It is obvious by the text of Ezekiel 28 that God does not credit Lucifer’s extreme beauty and manifold wisdom in any way as contributing to the development of a narcissistic attitude. In other words, Lucifer could not have accused God of contributing to his downfall by making him perfectly beautiful.

When Lucifer crossed the line from holiness and service to an enemy of God, he determined to dethrone his Maker. Isaiah 14:12-14 reads:

“12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”

Lucifer became self-willed fivefold saying “I will…”:

(A) Ascend into heaven.
(B) Exalt my throne above the stars (angels) of God.
(C) Sit also upon the mount of the congregation.
(D) Ascend above the heights of the clouds.
(E) Be like the most High.

Satan Was Instrumental in God’s Overall Plan for Man

Nothing that ever happens in life is due to happenstance. In other words, because God IS God, NOTHING ever occurs because of a lack of foresight, inadequate planning, events out of control, underestimation of something, lack of power or understanding, etc. Isaiah 46:9-10 reads:

“9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.”

Whatever happens – and let me make this abundantly clear – WHATEVER HAPPENS does happen because God performs His counsel “after the counsel of His own will” (Ephesians 1:11) and all at His pleasure and determination.

The Genesis 1 creation was undertaken by God to undergird His crowning creation – MAN! Everything was made FOR man – to SUPPORT man. Look at 1 Peter 1:19-20:

“19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.”

Now couple this scripture with Revelation 13:8:

“8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

(The Lamb was both foreordained and slain before the foundation of the world. This was all in anticipation of the God planned arrival of Satan who triggered the events that led to man’s fall. And as you will read further on, this strategy was planned by God to prepare the kingdom of God only for those sinful humans who out of love and freely by their choice would serve God for eternity.)

Man in the image and likeness of God was in God’s determined will eternally. God could have proceeded in one of two ways:

(A) Make man LACKING in free will to blindly obey or follow.
(B) Make man providing him with a choice to FREELY disobey if so desired.

Choice A provides God with mindless automatons (man,) robots who are forced through a lack of free will to disobey OR choice B giving man a conscious choice to freely decide for himself. If God had chosen the former, it could always be argued that said obedience eliminates love. Love “forced” or “coerced” or provided without man freely deciding for himself to give it IS NEITHER LOVE NOR FREE. However, if the latter were to be put in play, man could SELF-DETERMINE, i.e. through his own free will to obey making that love TRUE.

God chose the latter. Man was given free, conscious choice to decide for himself whether to obey God or disobey Him. This God-ordained decision required man to fall into sin. This in turn required God provide an enemy to Himself to turn man’s heart and mind from his Creator to Satan (opponent, enemy.) It also necessitated the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world which is THE TEST to allow man to decide for himself (believe the gospel and obey Acts 2:38) to become reconciled to his Creator OR to disobey and remain freely apart from God and take up eternal residence in the lake of fire.

(Many Christians ponder in their minds why did God provide for the existence of Satan if He knew that he would “turn” on Him. Why did God allow for the existence of evil? The above explanation is the reason. As being holy and righteous, it is against His nature to coerce any creature’s obedience. His love “compels” Him to allow man to decide a fate worse than death if that is his desire. (It is against God’s nature to make blind, obedient robots.)

WRAPPING UP

Satan was a crucial “chess piece” on God’s earthly chessboard to prepare man to be eternal dwellers in the kingdom of God. And as with Egypt’s pharaoh who hardened his heart to keep the children of Israel his captors, God DID NOT violate his (Satan’s) will. This is the mystery of God that man in his finite knowledge and wisdom will never be able to understand. How that God can achieve His goal and yet not violate any of His creature’s free will.

So too God can judge and eternally punish the devil for his rebellion and turmoil that he was the cause of on earth. Lucifer become Satan made the choice to rebel. He has had thousands of years to thwart God’s plan for man. Knowing that He planned to redeem man through a man-child, Satan conceived a plan to contaminate the bloodline of Adam’s seed. This was attempted by certain chosen angels called sons of God (Genesis 6:1-4) mating with the daughters of men. Of course, the Lamb of God (Genesis 22:8, John 1:29, 36) would have been powerless to redeem sinful man by the shedding of blood because that blood would have been hopelessly polluted. Human offspring would have been half-human, making it impossible for the birth of a completely human Messiah.

At this point in time, Satan has but a short time remaining:

“12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time” (Revelation 12:12.)

Here is Satan’s fate:

“10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever” (Revelation 20:10.)
