A college classmate of mine once did 14 drafts of a one-page reflection. Read an article, give your personal response—one page. And he was up all night doing 14 drafts!
I teased him, but I could also relate. Especially as Christian writers writing for God,
it can be intimidating to consider publishing anything less than perfection.
Recently, crying tears of frustration at my computer, I considered deleting an entire project. It wasn’t good enough, I thought, so I might as well just trash it and give up. But then it dawned on me: I was going to throw away my loaves and fishes because they weren’t enough, forgetting that God multiplies whatever we offer Him.
God never asked for flawlessness—He asked for faithfulness.

I can be a writer?!
I sat in the second row of “I’m a Beginner, Where Should I Start?” A lovely woman stood behind an overhead projector (that’s how long ago this was) encouraging us to start small, study publishers’ guidelines, try different genres, trust God’s timing, and join something called a critique group.
At that point in my “career” I’d managed to have one article accepted by a niche magazine.
Beyond that, I had stories in me and no idea what to do with them. But as I took rapid notes,
staring up at that wise, knowledgeable instructor like a weird fan girl,
I realized, I can do this. I can be a writer.
