This is a hands-on chess camp - only one of its kind in Sacramento area .. If the kid knows the basic chess rules, and is looking to improve his/her game-playing skills, then this camp should definitely help. Look for a half day of very exciting chess camp which includes:
a) An hour of guided chess (where a seasoned chess coach follows your child's moves, and helps identify weaknesses/improvements in gameplay..)
b) Puzzle time - solve unlimited chess puzzles - yes we said "unlimited !" - in our opinion, solving timed puzzles is the fastest way to identifying winning patterns (like pins, forks or discovers) in an actual game.
c) Challenge other players to a friendly game of chess - it is like having a a mini-tournament each day
... and more..

We're excited to announce our CHESS SUMMER CAMP in Folsom.

Camp will be led by a United States Chess Federation certified scholastic coach, including supervised gameplay with instruction, chess strategy puzzles, and more.

Thank you for visiting our page to know more about us.

We are a chess school - and we teach chess.

About me - the founder:
Like most of us, when I learnt my chess as a kid, my knowledge was initially limited to what my coach (typically a parent or a sibling) taught me. So essentially, when my friends and I played in tournaments in our early days, it was mostly a contest to decide who had the better coach. I'm sure we can all relate to this experience.

We are doing it a little different at our academy by creating and standardizing a curriculum comprising of 9 levels. And just like a third grader's math or science curriculum that remains the same across the entire school district, our curriculum will be the same irrespective of the teacher that teaches it or the school where we teach. We stay with your child throughout the year - we conduct tournaments, get your child access to a kid-friendly website where they can solve puzzles, challenge their pals or computer bots to a game, or watch educational chess videos. We are always accessible to you over phone or text, and can email you any handouts your child misses.

More about the sessions:
Our chess sessions at after-school programs are typically between 8-10 weeks long and each session covers one entire level. So if you miss a session, then you would have to work with us to catch up on the material taught in that session. We provide printed hand-outs for most sessions, so that you can review what was taught that day. A typical session has about 10 minutes of organizing (attendance, board-setup etc), about 30 minutes of lecture and about 20 minutes of game-play where the kids practice what they've learnt that day. We have one goal at heart - to make learning and playing chess a fun activity for your child.

More about our teachers:
Have you been to a local Youth Basketball (or Baseball or Soccer) Association? Did you see an NBA player coach these students or did you see a bunch of extremely motivated coaches connect well with the teams and coach them? And at what point would you want an NBA star to work with a child and coach them?

Chess at our academy is no different. We are constantly looking for teachers who are very comfortable with chess, and more importantly, are able to connect well with our students. We specifically ask our teachers to focus on our curriculum before they teach their methods to the kids. And for this reason, we are not primarily looking for a teacher's USCF ratings. In our findings, the more higher-rating a teacher has, the more reluctant he/she is to work with beginner players. (like expecting an NBA star player to work with a first grader who is still learning the rules of the game or requiring a first grade math teacher to require degrees in advanced calculus). Once your child masters the basics taught in our academy, we'll help you by pointing you to coaches who can work with your child 1:1 to improve your child's ratings.

If you (or someone you know) would be a very good teacher and if also enjoy playing chess, we welcome you to join our team.

Like in all classrooms, discipline is another challenge we face every day. We try to address discipline in our terms and conditions which we'll share with you when you enroll your child.

To conclude:
Chess is a wonderful educational opportunity to build a child’s ability to focus and understand the art of strategy that will be helpful all their lives with math, social skills, work ethics. We are excited to be a part of your kid's journey through elementary school, and we look forward to seeing your kid in our after-school chess classes.
