Now that SAT and ACT are optional, should I take one?

You should. There are four reasons: 1. Colleges would have banned all the tests, not making them optional, if they meant it, 2. There is a hidden intention, 3. Well, most of the things we write into the Common App are optional anyway, and 4. There’s no reason not to take one.

1. Let’s have a look at the vague language colleges usually use when they announce the adoption of the test optional policy: “We fully understand the hardship that students are going through under the current situation and are not going to penalize them on the admission process for not taking the SAT nor the ACT this year.” At the same time, “We appreciate the passion and the determination of the students who managed to take the SAT or the ACT even during the pandemic; their efforts and achievements will be fully considered.” What kind of miraculous way is there to benefit the students who took the tests but at the same time not to penalize students who did not take the tests? If colleges were actually going to ignore the test scores, they would have made them illegal, not making them optional.

2. The hidden intention: Even though the test optional policy has become the focus of the media attention only after the pandemic, it is not anything new at all: many colleges have been lowering/eliminating their requirements on the applications standard over the years. The full account of their motivation behind the test optional policy requires another (very long) post, but the summary is that colleges get more applications when they make their admissions requirement more ‘relaxed,’ so their acceptance rate drops, so they can boost their selectivity, which can help them to raise their college rankings, so they get even more applications the next year. It is a virtuous cycle for them!

3. The problem about average: Let’s talk about the average application that barely meets the requirements from the college's admission office. Would the student with that application get into one of the prestigious colleges? Definitely not. Let me put it this way. Average income per person in the U.S. is over sixty thousand dollars. That means, a family of four should be making two hundred and forty thousand dollars every year, on average. Well, not many of us are making that much money. Why is that? The top 10% makes so much more money compared to average people, raising the ‘average’ to inconceivable level. It’s not about whether we get in, it’s about where we get in. If we are aiming for the top 10% colleges, we should make everything in our application stand out.

4. The SAT and the ACT scores are the easiest things to accomplish among the things we need to prepare for the college applications. Every year, my 6 weeks intensive program in summer shows the average score improvement of 200+ points in case of the SAT and 6+ points in case of the ACT. For those who do not need the 6 weeks or who have other plans in summer, I have 10 day intensives during every holiday season. If you can make a part of you application shine easily and quickly, of course you do it, optional or not.

미국 대학 입시: 태국 코끼리와 동네 아이스크림 가게

모든 자격이 비슷한 두 학생이 있을때, 결국 당락을 결정짓는 것은 무엇일까요? 화려하고 좋은 스펙이 아니라, Application 자체의 완결성 입니다. ‘Who gets in and why?’라는 책에 있는 예시를 각색하여 소개합니다.

미국 명문대 입학 사정 팀이 고민에 빠져 있습니다. 어떤 면으로 보아도 탈락 시킬 이유가 없는 두 학생이 있는데, 12학년 성적이 좀 떨어지는 추세였던 것입니다. 물론, 지원서 안에서 이유를 찾을 수 있었는데요, 한 학생은 평소에 동물 보호에 깊은 관심을 가지고 있던 중, 태국에서 코끼리가 관광 및 노동 목적으로 학대 받는다는 소식을 접하고 11학년 이후 여름 방학 때 태국으로 날아갔습니다. 현지 동물 보호 단체와 연계하여 활발한 활동을 펼치다가, 그만 개학 시기를 약간 놓쳐 버렸고, 그게 학점에 영향을 줬네요. 반면, 다른 학생은 다섯 남매의 맞이입니다. 본인의 대학 등록금과 가족 생활비에 도움을 주고자, 11학년 이후 여름 방학 때 일주일에 30시간 씩 동네 아이스크림 가게에서 일을 했습니다. 개학 후에도 후임을 찾을 때 까지 책임감을 가지고 같은 시간을 일하다가 그만 학점이 좀 떨어졌습니다.

지원서에 이렇게 쓰면 둘 다 탈락입니다.

전에 소개했던 것 처럼, 입학 사정관들은 불타는 헌신을 가지고 일해야 하는 사람들이 아니고, 그렇게 일하지도 않습니다. 시스템 안에서 기계적으로 자기 할 일을 할 뿐입니다. 그렇다면, 어떻게든 좋은 이유를 찾아서 학생을 한명이라도 더 탈락 시키는 것이 나의 일을 줄이는 합리적인 선택입니다. 코끼리 봉사 활동을 간 학생의 경우, 부유한 집안 자제라는 인상을 지울 수 없습니다. 미국에서 태국은 엄청 먼 거리이고, 도대체 두 달 가까이 태국에서 어떤 자금으로 활동을 한 걸까요? 물론, 그 자체가 나쁘다는 것이 아닙니다. 하지만, 동물 보호 봉사 활동을 지원서에 기재한 이유가, 학생의 열정이 무엇이고, 그를 위해 얼마나 노력했으며, 결과적으로 성장했다는 것을 보여주는 것이었다면, 부모 잘 만나서 좋은 곳에 휴가 간 김에 대학 입시에 쓸 사진 몇 장 찍고 왔다는 인상을 주면 절대 안 됩니다. 아이스크림 가게에서 일한 학생의 경우, 신빙성이 떨어집니다. 아무리 미국이라지만, 고등학생이 일주일에 30시간씩 아르바이트를 했다는 것도 믿어지지않고 (이게 합법일까요? 어떤 주 이야기인지..) 개학을 한 이후에도 그 업무 시간을 유지했다는 건 도저히 믿을 수 없는 이야기입니다.

두 학생 모두 붙을 수 있는 간단한 방법이 있습니다.

코끼리 봉사 활동을 한 학생의 경우, 어떻게 자금을 모았고 경비를 마련했는지를 두 세 줄 정도로 적었으면 합격입니다. 아이스크림 가게에서 일한 학생의 경우, 함께 일한 매니저의 이름과 연락처, 그리고 본인의 상세 업무 별 근무 시간을 적었으면 합격입니다. 도대체 그 자금이 어디서 나왔지? 당연한 질문입니다. 그렇게 많이 일한게 사실이야? 당연한 질문입니다. 입학 사정관들이 심사하면서 궁금해 할 내용이 뻔한데, 지원서 작성을 객관적이고 체계적으로 검증하지 않고 자기 눈으로만 보면서 하니까 이런 헛점이 생기는 것 입니다. 코끼리 봉사 활동과 아이스크림 아르바이트 모두 훌륭한 활동입니다. 우열을 가릴 수 없습니다. 지원서의 전체 방향과 에세이 내용에 따라서는, 아이스크림 아르바이트가 훨씬 강력한 스토리가 될 수도 있겠네요. 하지만 그게 문제가 아닙니다. 미국 대학 입시 지원서를 작성할 때에는 내가 하고 싶은 이야기는 출발이지 목표가 아닙니다. 지원서 자체가 보고서로서의 완결성을 가지는 것, 논리에 헛점이 없는 지원서를 만드는 것이 가장 중요한 일입니다.

미국 대학 입시: ACT나 SAT가 선택으로 바뀌었다고 하는데, 꼭 봐야 할까요?

네, 봐야 합니다. 아주 예외적인 경우를 제외하면요. 네 가지 이유가 있습니다. 1. 옵션이라고 했지 안 받는다고는 안 했습니다. 2. 숨은 의도가 있습니다. 3. 어차피 미국 대학 입시에 필요한 많은 요소들이 다 옵션입니다. 4. 안 볼 이유가 없습니다. 아래에 자세히 설명하겠습니다.

1. 많은 대학들이 Test Optional Policy를 도입하면서 애매한 언어를 구사합니다. “코로나 상황에 당면하여 많은 학생들이 SAT나 ACT를 보는 것에 부담을 느끼는 것을 인지하고 있으니, 시험을 못 본 학생들도 마음껏 지원하라. 피해가지 않게 하겠다.” 라고 하면서 동시에, “그럼에도 불구하고 시험을 본 학생들의 열정에 감사한다. 심사 과정에 충분히 반영하겠다.” 라고 합니다. 시험을 본 학생들에게 혜택을 주면서, 동시에 점수를 제출하지 않은 학생들에게 피해가 가지 않는 기적의 방법이 과연 있을까요? 또한, 정말로 시험 점수를 평가에 반영하지 않으려면 모두 못 내게 하는 간단한 방법이 있는데, 그런 대학은 아직 없습니다.

2. 숨은 의도: 사실 Test Optional Policy는 코로나 때문에 시작된 것이 아닙니다. 네, 현재 미국에서는 많은 Test Center들이 시험을 취소하면서 일부 지역의 경우, 1년에 한 두번 시험 보기도 어려운 것이 사실입니다. 하지만, 이러한 상황 이전에도 많은 대학들은 Application Requirement를 계속 약화시켜 왔습니다. 방대한 내용이기 때문에 다른 글에서 자세히 설명하겠지만, 요약하자면 그 이유는, Acceptance Rate이 낮아지고 (지원서를 많이 받고 많이 탈락시키니까) 그럼 Seletivity가 올라가고, 그럼 학교의 Ranking이 올라가고, 그럼 더 많은 지원서를 받을 수 있는 선순환 구조를 구축할 수 있기 때문입니다.

3. 평균의 오류: 대한민국 인당 국민소득이 3천 만원을 넘었다고 하더라고요. 그럼 일반적인 4인 가정은 1억이 훌쩍 넘는 소득을 매년 올리고 있나요? 아니지요. 상위 10%의 고소득자가 어마어마한 소득을 벌기 때문에 전체 평균이 상식 이상으로 올라가는거죠. 미국 대학 입시에서 평균이란 무엇일까요? 대학 입시 요강에서 요구하는 최소한만 하는 것 입니다. 대학이나 언론에서 이야기하는 ‘일반적인 경우’라는 것의 수준은, 우리가 상상하는 것보다 굉장히 낮습니다. 어차피 미국 고등학생 70% 이상이 자신이 1지망한 대학에 합격합니다. 전국 대학교 입학 정원과 고등학교 졸업생 수가 거의 비슷하거든요. 우리가 고민하는 것은 어차피, 상위 10%의 좋은 대학에 합격하는 것이고, 그렇기 때문에 그동안 대학의 입시 요강에서 ‘필수로’ 지정한 것 이상을 보여주기 위해 노력해 왔던 것 입니다.

4. 미국 대학 입시를 위해 준비해야 할 것들 중에서, SAT와 ACT 준비가 가장 쉽습니다. 매년 여름 저와 SAT 혹은 ACT를 공부하는 학생들의 경우 6주 수업 동안 SAT 평균 200점, ACT 평균 6점 이상의 점수 상승을 이뤘습니다. 기초가 탄탄하고 준비가 되어 있는 학생들은, 여름 방학 필요없이 열흘 정도의 봄 방학 혹은 겨울 방학 동안 준비하여 좋은 성과를 냈습니다. 짧은 시간 집중적으로 준비하여, 숫자로 보이는 구체적인 결과를 낼 수 있는데, 구태여 시험을 피할 이유가 없습니다.

ACT vs SAT

You need a detailed analysis based on a well designed diagnostic test, not general information and hearsays that many parents and students usually rely on when they decide between the ACT and the SAT. Universal guidelines do not really work; because the choice is more about personality and characteristics rather than skill sets and knowledge; and also because much of information in this matter is either wrong or too broad to apply to individual cases.

For example, a student with the attached diagnostic test result may incline to taking the SAT, but I would definitely recommend taking the ACT, because:
1. This student has more points to gain in the ACT math. Also, he/she is missing only hard questions, which I can easily help with teaching math concepts. If the student misses even one easy question, the process is usually a lot harder, because now we need to fix the habit of making simple mistakes.
2. In the ACT English section, the student tends to miss more on the second passage, meaning he/she can improve fast with a simple time management coaching.
3. This student did really well on the ACT science section: it is rare that students get 28+ on the section on their first try. Also, students tend to score higher on the Science section compared to the Reading section eventually.
