As we wrap up the first quarter, we are grateful for the positive start to the school year and for the hard work of our students, staff, and families!

Remember, there is no school for students this Friday, October 16, for a teacher workday, or Monday and Tuesday, October 19–20, for fall break.

Last night’s School Board meeting celebrated the people who make Floyd County Public Schools special, recognized the importance of strong leadership, and prepared for the school year. Here are a few highlights from the evening:

We presented an Impact Award to Daylan Edgar in recognition of his extraordinary courage and selflessness in helping save his family during a house fire. We are proud to have Daylan as part of our FCPS family and continue to wish him a strong recovery.

We recognized our School Board members for their participation in professional learning through the Virginia School Boards Association. Their commitment to lifelong learning sets a great example for our division and reflects their dedication to serving our students and community.

In honor of National Principals’ Month, we celebrated our five principals and thanked them for the leadership, care, and commitment they bring to our schools each day. We are grateful for the difference they make for our students, staff, and families!

The Board also heard updates from our schools on plans for the 2026–2027 school year and scheduled its annual school visitations.

What is the proposed local sales tax for school facilities?

The Virginia General Assembly approved legislation allowing counties and cities to ask voters to consider an additional local sales and use tax of up to 1% for eligible school construction and major renovation projects.

The tax is not automatic. The Floyd County Board of Supervisors approved placing the question on the November 3 ballot, and voters will make the final decision.

The division is pursuing this option because our annual operating budget alone cannot fully address our significant facility needs.

Today is National Custodian Day, and we want to recognize the incredible custodians who care for our schools each day.

Our custodians do so much more than keep our buildings clean. They help create welcoming spaces for students and staff, take pride in their schools, and are always ready to step in when something needs to be done. Their work often happens behind the scenes, but the difference they make is felt throughout our schools every day.

To all of our FCPS custodians: thank you for the care, pride, and hard work you bring to our schools. We appreciate you today and every day!

Today, our FCPS early childhood team had the opportunity to learn, connect, and celebrate at the Igniting Connections Symposium for Early Childhood Educators at Virginia Tech.

All our early childhood teachers attended, along with students from our Educators Rising Club. What a great opportunity for our future educators to learn alongside professionals already making a difference in the lives of our youngest learners.

We were also excited to celebrate one of our own, Holly Kiser, Early Childhood Special Education Teacher and Preschool Coordinator, who was nominated for the Early Childhood Champion Award! We are so proud of Holly and the care, expertise, and love she brings to our students and families each day.

We are grateful for opportunities like this that connect educators, inspire students, and strengthen early childhood education across our community.

Last school year, FCPS cafeterias served 142,284 breakfasts and 187,785 lunches to our students! That’s a lot of meals and an important part of making sure our students are ready for a great day at school.

Our cafeteria teams do so much more than serve food. They know our students, care about them, and help make mealtimes a welcoming part of the school day.

Remember, all FCPS students receive free breakfast and free lunch each school day. No application or payment is required.

We are grateful for the care our food service teams show our students every day!

Today, a team from FCPS attended the Virginia Conference on Childhood Trauma, presented by New River Valley Community Services.

We are grateful for opportunities to learn together and strengthen how we support our students. When schools and community partners work together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our young people!

Today we are celebrating the incredible IT professionals who keep our schools connected and help our students and staff have the tools they need to learn, teach, and work each day.

So much of what our IT team does happens behind the scenes, from solving those “my computer isn’t working” moments to keeping our systems running, supporting technology in our classrooms, and helping FCPS move forward with new ideas and innovation.

Thank you for your patience, expertise, problem-solving, and willingness to jump in whenever you’re needed. We couldn’t do what we do without you!

We are kicking off a new school year of Staff Spotlights by celebrating the people who make our schools special every day!

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Tanya Hicks, Food Service Manager at Check Elementary School. Tanya’s story is especially meaningful and reminds us that working in a school is about so much more than the job itself. It’s about relationships, teamwork, and the little moments that make a difference in a child’s day.

We are grateful for Tanya and for all of the food service staff across FCPS who nourish our students while creating welcoming, caring spaces each day. Thank you for all you do!

We’re excited to celebrate more of our incredible FCPS staff throughout the year!

This Labor Day, we are grateful for the hard work, dedication, and contributions of the many people who help make our schools and community strong. Thank you to our employees, families, community partners, and all of those who work each day to make a difference for others.

Enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday with family and friends!

Reminder: Floyd County Public Schools will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026, for Labor Day. Schools and offices will reopen on Tuesday.
