🍂 A Wonderful Evening at the Floyd Center for the Arts!

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Saturday for the Opening Reception of our three new fall exhibitions! It was a wonderful evening filled with conversation, creativity, and community, and we were thrilled to welcome so many of you to the Floyd Center for the Arts.

It was especially wonderful to see our galleries filled with artists, friends, and neighbors coming together to celebrate the arts. Your continued support means so much to our exhibiting artists, staff, volunteers, and the Center.

A special thank you to all of our exhibiting artists for sharing their incredible work, to Theresa Rykaczewski for serving as our New Works 2026 juror, and to our dedicated Gallery Committee for the time, care, and hard work they put into hanging and installing these exhibitions. We are so grateful for the many hands that help bring our galleries to life!

Gina Louthian-Stanley is a multi-media artist, encaustic painter, writer, and workshop instructor living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Her work often connects to the natural world around her. A licensed pre K-12 educator in Virginia, Gina has taught classes and workshops nationally and internationally.

🎨 Expressive Accordion and Concertina Books in Ink and Watercolor

Experiment with watercolor, inks, color, pattern, and line while creating expressive accordion and concertina books. Great for beginners!

🖌️ Cold Wax Alchemy
Nov 6–8 | 10 AM–3 PM
Spend three days exploring the layers, textures, and marks possible with oil and cold wax, including color, glazing, texture, transfers, printmaking, collage, and more. All skill levels welcome!

🔥 Exploring 3-D With Encaustic
April 16–18, 2027 | 10 AM–3 PM
Take encaustic beyond the flat surface with wax, image transfer, collage, found objects, organic materials, and dimensional forms.

Featuring 65 works by 49 artists from across our region, showcasing fresh ideas, evolving techniques, and the creative practices happening in our arts community today.

This year’s exhibition was juried by Theresa Rykaczewski, an artist, curator, educator, and museum professional who serves as Art Museum Manager and Professor of Museum Studies at Radford University.

Calling all artists and makers! The deadline to apply for the 32nd Annual Winterfest & Festival of Trees at the Floyd Center for the Arts is almost here!

Applications are due Friday, October 2!

Join us December 5 & 6, 2026, from 10 AM–5 PM for one of Floyd’s longest-running holiday traditions. For 32 years, Winterfest has brought together regional artists, craftspeople, and holiday shoppers for a festive weekend celebrating handmade art and craft.

Last year, more than 1,400 visitors attended Winterfest, making it a wonderful opportunity to get your work in front of holiday shoppers!

The Floyd Center for the Arts is proud to present Caddo Lake, an exhibition of large-scale black-and-white photography by Richmond-based photographer Pat Lawson in the Breezeway Gallery.

Along the border of East Texas and Louisiana lies Caddo Lake, an extraordinary landscape of dark water, towering cypress trees, and draping Spanish moss.
Through his photography, Lawson captures the quiet, mysterious, and almost primeval character of this remarkable place. Cypress trees rise from dark pools of water while curtains of Spanish moss create a landscape that feels haunting, beautiful, and removed from time.

Lawson’s photography focuses primarily on people and landscapes. His work seeks to capture the character and circumstances of a subject so strongly that the image invites the viewer to step into the scene.

We hope you’ll visit the Breezeway Gallery to experience Caddo Lake through Lawson’s striking black-and-white photography.

🧶 Shared Threads: Fiber Processes Hand to Hand

The Floyd Center for the Arts is proud to present Shared Threads: Fiber Processes Hand to Hand, a curated exhibition celebrating the artistry, innovation, and tradition of fiber arts in the Falcon Gallery.

Fiber is more than a material. It is a way of making, connecting, and preserving knowledge across generations.

Featuring work by artists from our region, Shared Threads explores fiber as both process and practice. From weaving, quilting, spinning, knitting, crochet, felting, stitching, basketry, and soft sculpture to experimental fiber processes, the exhibition brings together techniques passed down through generations alongside contemporary approaches to making.

Finished pieces and works in progress invite visitors to look beyond the finished object and discover the processes, skills, and knowledge behind how these works are made.

Together, these works celebrate the makers who preserve tradition, embrace innovation, and keep creative knowledge moving hand to hand.

🏺 Intro to Wheel Throwing with Grace Carroll

Meet our new ceramics instructor, Grace Carroll! In this six-week beginner series, students will learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing while creating finished, functional ceramic pieces. Grace will guide students through throwing, trimming, attaching handles and accents, and glazing, with plenty of room to incorporate their own artistic ideas.

No previous wheel throwing experience required. One 25 lb. bag of clay is included with registration.

Grace Carroll is a ceramic artist based in Radford, Virginia, specializing in wheel-thrown functional pottery. She earned her BFA in Ceramics in 2025 and is currently pursuing her MFA at Radford University. Grace serves as President of the RU Ceramics Guild and loves introducing people to pottery. We are excited to welcome her to the Floyd Center for the Arts teaching community!

Floyd County native Kathy Dulaney is sharing a craft rooted in the traditions of Floyd County and the Appalachian Mountains, passing knowledge from one maker to the next and helping keep these skills alive for future generations.

✨ New Works 2026

The Floyd Center for the Arts is proud to present New Works 2026, a juried exhibition featuring work by 49 artists from across our region and showcasing the latest work, fresh ideas, and evolving creative practices happening in our arts community.

On view in the Hayloft Gallery, New Works 2026 features artwork created within the past two years and celebrates the creative journeys artists are taking in their studios today. From experimenting with unfamiliar materials and techniques to finding fresh approaches to traditional forms, the exhibition offers a look at what is new and evolving within our regional arts community.

This year's exhibition was juried by Theresa Rykaczewski, an artist, curator, educator, and museum professional whose work bridges studio art, art history, and community-centered exhibition making.

Theresa has organized more than 100 exhibitions and public art installations featuring local, international, contemporary, and historical artists. Her own oil paintings have been exhibited in more than 50 juried exhibitions, and she currently serves as Art Museum Manager and Professor of Museum Studies at Radford University.

We hope you'll visit the Hayloft Gallery to experience the work selected for this year's exhibition and celebrate the 49 artists continuing to explore, experiment, and grow in their creative practices.
