Safe Surfin' Foundation

Safe Surfin' Foundation A cyber safety & responsibility educational initiative created by law enforcement professionals. Together, we’re improving and saving lives.

Our Mission:
The Safe Surfin’ Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit Cyber Safety and Responsibility educational initiative created by law enforcement professionals in 1998 and dedicated not only to protecting youth from those who would do them harm but pro-actively educating them in the safe and responsible use of today’s ever-changing technology. Please join us in our quest. Our Approach

:
Over the last two decades, we have gained valuable insight into the effectiveness of our message. In order to stop predators in their tracks, we must have informed citizens of cyberspace who have fully embraced the principles of online safety and responsibility. Your ongoing support is critical and will help us educate the internet users that are confronted with danger. Our Goal:
An informed citizenry of cyberspace makes for a safer world. We want to stop the predators right at their intended victims, before a crime has occurred. We want to stop hateful or illegal text messages before they are sent. We want to see technology used to brighten the lives of others, rather than be an instrument of harm. And our goal is to get you involved.

💙 Safe Surfin’ Foundation is proud to be represented at the 92nd Annual West Virginia Moose Association Convention!

Our Vice President and dedicated volunteer, Jim Hale, is on hand at this year’s convention, sharing the Safe Surfin’ Foundation mission and connecting with Moose members who share our commitment to protecting children and strengthening communities.

As a volunteer, Jim generously gives his time, energy, and heart to help us educate and empower children, families, and communities to stay safer in today’s digital world. His presence at the convention is another opportunity to raise awareness about the very real dangers children face online—and, most importantly, the steps we can all take to help keep them safe.

We’re grateful to Jim for representing Safe Surfin’ and to the West Virginia Moose Association for the opportunity to be part of its 92nd Annual Convention.

If you’re attending, stop by and say hello to Jim, learn more about our work, and find out how you can join us in creating a safer digital world for our children.

🎒 **Back-to-School Means Back to Routines—including Digital Ones!** 📱

Summer break always seems to fly by! ☀️ As families make the transition from sleeping in, flexible schedules, and extra screen time to **alarm clocks, homework, and school-night routines**, getting back into the swing of things can be challenging.

We love this reminder from **Common Sense Media**: You don’t have to change everything overnight. **Start small.**

Back-to-school season is also a great opportunity to reset your family’s digital habits:

📱 Set reasonable screen-time expectations for school nights.
🌙 Establish a device-free bedtime routine.
🍎 Keep mealtimes screen-free when possible.
📚 Create distraction-free time for homework and studying.
👨‍👩‍👧 Talk with your kids about what they’re doing, watching, and experiencing online.

At **Safe Surfin’ Foundation**, we encourage families to make **online safety part of the back-to-school conversation**. Digital boundaries work best when kids understand why they matter—and when parents model healthy habits, too.

Give your family some grace as everyone adjusts. A few small changes today can help create healthier routines throughout the school year. 💙

**Parents and caregivers: What’s your best tip for making the back-to-school transition easier? Share it in the comments! 👇**

Does Social Media Cause Eating Disorders in Adolescents?

It’s a question many parents and caregivers are asking—and an important conversation to have.

While social media alone does not necessarily cause an eating disorder, the content young people see online can influence body image, self-esteem, eating behaviors, and how they compare themselves to others.

The resource in provides research-based information to help families better understand:

✔️ The relationship between social media, negative body image, and disordered eating
✔️ Factors that may make some young people more vulnerable
✔️ Which youth may be at greater risk
✔️ How parents and caregivers can encourage a healthy body image
✔️ How to talk with kids about the content they see on social media

At Safe Surfin’ Foundation, we encourage parents and caregivers to stay involved in their children's digital lives. Ask what they're seeing online, talk about unrealistic or edited images, and remind them that social media doesn't always reflect reality.

Most importantly, create a space where kids know they can come to you without fear of judgment when something online makes them uncomfortable or affects how they feel about themselves.

💙 Stay involved. Stay informed. Keep the conversation going.

📱 Healthy Screen Habits Start With Healthy Digital Boundaries

Screens are part of everyday life for our kids—but creating healthy boundaries around screen use can make a big difference.

The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory and Toolkit on the Harms of Screen Use, published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, highlights how screen exposure can disrupt sleep, which can affect learning, mood, behavior, physical health, and overall development.

🧠 Nearly 50% of adolescents report losing track of how much time they spend on their phones.

Families can take simple steps to build healthier digital habits:

🍽️ Make mealtimes screen-free.
💤 Put devices away before bedtime.
📱 Avoid multitasking with screens.
⏸️ Encourage kids—and adults—to take breaks when needed.

At the Safe Surfin’ Foundation, we believe online safety isn't only about knowing the dangers kids may encounter online. It's also about helping families develop healthy, intentional relationships with technology.

Talk with your children about their screen habits. Set boundaries together, model those boundaries, and keep the conversation going.

Small changes can help create healthier habits—online and offline. 💙

💙 One Conversation Can Save a Life.

We are honored to stand alongside the Bryce Tate Memorial Foundation in the fight to protect children from s*xtortion and online exploitation.

This past weekend in Hampton, Virginia, Bryce’s father shared his son’s story—turning unimaginable loss into a powerful mission to educate families, raise awareness, and help protect other children.

Every time Bryce’s story is told, another parent may learn what to look for. Another family may start an important conversation. Another young person may realize they are not alone and that help is available.

The Safe Surfin’ Foundation is incredibly grateful to partner with the Bryce Tate Memorial Foundation in this mission, and we thank The Moose Association for providing the opportunity to bring this critical message to their community.

There is more work ahead, and we will continue working together to educate parents, empower young people, and raise awareness about the devastating dangers of s*xtortion.

Please share Bryce’s story. Talk to your children. Talk to other parents. Keep the conversation going.

Because one conversation can save a life.

Turning Awareness Into Action Against Sextortion

Safe Surfin’ Foundation President Eddie Worth was joined Adam Tate, father of Bryce Tate and President of the Bryce Tate Memorial Foundation, at the Virginia Moose Association Convention to deliver an important presentation on the growing threat of s*xtortion.

For Adam, this mission is deeply personal. After losing his 15-year-old son, Bryce, to an online s*xtortion scheme, Adam and his family turned unimaginable heartbreak into purpose—working to raise awareness, educate families, and help prevent another child from becoming a victim.

Together, Eddie and Adam shared a powerful message with Virginia Moose members: education, awareness, and open conversations with our children can save lives.

We are grateful to the Virginia Moose Association for providing a platform for this critical conversation and for continuing to stand alongside organizations working to protect children and families.
